Hi Guys

Firstly, really sorry I haven't been in touch for a while, I haven't had internet access. I don't want to come back on here begging for help but things aren't good and I wonder if you guys could give me some advise adn I also want to stress how VERY IMPORTANT IT IS TO GO FOR SMEARS

I was a late "starter" in life and never bothered to go for smears. Though dogged by health problems all my adult life, my doctor never asked or never suggested and it was something never suggested or talked about by colleages, friends etc.

This year, I was diagnosed with an overactive bladder and referred to a gynae for tests. The week I was to see him, my sisters childminder passed away, same age as me, of cervical cancer, so it was something talked about a lot by myself and my sister. I was ashamed to say I had NEVER had a smear test. My sisters childminder hadn't a smear since her youngest child was born, she was now 12. Unfortunatly it was too late for her. She was way too young to die.

I was in hospital that day in March 2008 and said to my doc that I hadn't a smear for a while (i didn't say i never had one) and he did one there and then.

I heard nothing for ages, and eventually received a letter stating my smear was abnormal and to go back in 6 months, so in September, I went back for my follow up. In the meantime, my periods got very heavy, I was bleeding a lot, and was bruising easily. My gynae was worried about the bleeding and bruising and my blood pressure sky high. He did the repeat smear, and two weeks ago i got a phone call to say that this test was ALSO abnormal and i've to have a Colpscopy on 28th November.

Honestly, I'm scared basically because I just never bothered to go for a smear and hey, now i might be paying for it. My health has deteriorated over the last years and tests showed nothing until these tests. I assumed it was all stress due to house situation and other things happening.

I can't believe I was so stupid. I don't know and can't say if there is anything wrong with me, but I'm totally scared. I've to bring someone to drive me etc and livng away from home, there are few peopel who can. I know its probably nothing but doesn't help. I'm scared.

I am sure I'm probably fine, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your regular smears.

Thanks for listening.

I agree with the importance of smear tests. A girl I knew at school died in her 20's of cervical cancer leaving a daughter aged 3yrs.
I have had smears since my early 30's and a few have come back with abnormal cells but when taken again they had cleared themselves which can happen.
I must admit that I recently had a letter that my test was due but what with finding I had skin cancer and being treated for that I haven't gotten around to booking the test. Too late now as I am going to be out of action for at least the next 6 weeks but something i will definately do once mobile again!
I will be thinking of you on the 28th Nov Ann-Marie and hope that whatever they have found they can treat you for it.
Take care

I was pleased to read this, I have a problem that I know I should get checked but im too embarrassed to go, which I know is very childish. I can find three small spots/lumps about pea size on my cervic and the wall of my vigina. I need to go and ge thm checked, in fact now being able write it down makes me feel I will call the doctor tomorrow.

Good wake up call for me! I had a smear with abnormal cells 6 months ago - they said I would be called up but so far I have not received anything from them (GP/ NHS??). Think I will just book for another smear without their reminder on Monday as it takes a few weeks for an appointment....

Hi

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I am so cross with myself, and to be honest, with the health service the way it is, I do not beleive women should have to wait for a test that could potentially save their lives.

Maybe I'm a lucky one, and I will thank dear Angela (my sisters childminder) for saving my life if that is the case. I will never, ever forget or not bother to go for them again.

My last smear a couple of weeks ago was horrific, so I dread to think waht the Colpscopy will be like ;-( I know they are not pleasant but I cried during this one.

My periods have gotten very heavy in the last few months, and for the week of that, I'm stuck indoors as cannot be out for too long. Also finding sex very painful and that is only in the last couple of months too, so that is mainly why I'm worried too. All seem to be "symptoms" of cervial cancer.

Also reading Jade Goody's story, makes you sick that someone so young hadn't been seen to before now. God love her, and I wish her well.

I'm glad my story will help people realise how important the smear test, adn please God things will be fine.

Thanks for listening.

Anne-Marie

And just so people don't think that's your ego kicking in, I recognised that you've used your username from t'other forum on here. 😉

LOL 😀

Seriously thought, it's a good subject you raise. Even from a male perspective, it's important to recognise that we should all look out for anything "unusual" about ourselves no-matter how "embarrassing" a place it appears to be in. You may think you are too embarrassed to go see a doctor about it, but please bear in mind, the doctors (and nurses) have had to deal with things many times more gross that prodding around with your privates. That, to them, is something they do on almost a daily basis, so for gawds sake, get yourself down to your doctor and get yourself checked out. What would you rather be... a little bit embarrassed... or dead!... Not a tricky choice is it?

All Love and Reiki Hugs

Hi Anne Marie

Sending you some reiki and positive thoughts.

I was really lucky as my doctor was one of the few in the country that actually offered a colposcopy service in her medical practice. All of her female patients had cervical screening offered to them. She also wrote a book called Smear Tests by Dr Jane Chomet and Julian Chomet which contains quite a lot of useful information. You may or may not want to look at a copy in your local library if they have one it is a mine of useful information.

Wishing you good luck for your appointment in November.

Luv Binah

:p Thanks hun. My dad was in foul humour over weekend, he has to have all his teeth removed this week and refitted with false ones, and he kept going on about how he was dreading it (understandably too) but I made him laugh when I said "well, at least its only your mouth, they'll be looking into" 😀
