hi all i have been suffering with sciatica for several months now,the pain seems worse when i get up from lying down ,its not too bad getting up from a sitting position, does this mean it is better to sit than to lie ,thanks ady
i can only go from my own experience... but sitting for too long was the worst for me... are you getting up properly from lying down...and do you have support under your kness when you are lying down? (i was told to and eased a lot of pressure on the back)
i can sypathise so much with you...
I used hot water bottles on my back and under my legs to help ease the pain...
I'm sure whoever is treating you can tell you more about it.
hope you lose that pain soon x
Hi ady,
The mind/body connection in thought patterns to exhibit sciatica are related to fear of money, fear of the future and being hypocritical. Any of these ring with you? A change of thinking process may help eleviate what is happening with you at the moment.
Cheers
hi swordfish, i am compelled! could you tell me a bit more about what you said? I still have bouts of sciatica and I have all those fears...
Swordfish get off the drugs.
It sounds most likely that you both need to exercise your spine more. A stiff back will cause problems. Flexibility and strengthening of the core muscles and lumbar region will reduce this pain and promote better posture to avoid it again.
This obviously applies if you have not herniated a disc but can improve the condition. Seek an mri scan to be certain and further medical advice. A chiropractor or physio may be able to help if its simply muscle spasm or misalignment from bad posture and lack of exercise that is trapping the nerve.
Check out the discectomy on this forum for more from serious sufferers.
I know how bad it can get. Good luck.
Hello Jayboy,
Did you scout around the forums for a while before you joined up? From your first comment it would appear not. If you would like to do that now you will find that everyone has the right on these forums to express their beliefs and offer advice should they so wish. What generally doesn't happen is that one member tells another where to get off just because they don't believe the particular view which is being expressed. Should you wish to continue to denigrate other members for their views, then I think you're in the wrong place and this forum isn't for you.
Your second sentence appears to offer good solid sound advice. Some people may take it, others may be looking for more. I offer a different view. Had you added a "lol" or suitable emoticon afterwards it could possibly have been viewed as a jokey comment, rather than the unnecessary and unwarranted derogatory comment it appears to me to be and clearly highlights your narrow viewpoint of the world we live in.
Cheers
Hi Beautystudent,
I have pm'd you.
Cheers
Hi Ady It definitely helps to move and not to stay in one position for too long. Have you tried Black cohosh it's a traditional herbal remedy for nerve pain?
Sorry Swordfish, I was having a laugh and didn't mean to offend in any way. Anyone can express their point of view obviously.
I do see your point of view in its relation to stress. This could well be the underlying cause as stress is a factor in creating tension especially in the back which leads to problems.
Exercise helps to relieve stress, and exercise is simple and also known to be very effective for the back, body and mind as any solution, probably because of this.
Changing ones thought process might not be so easy if you really do have money, etc to worry about.
How would you do that if this were the case?:)
Hi Jayboy.
Thank you, yes, but I think the underlying cause is always in our heads. How many of us in our lives are racing around doing this, doing that, and therefore not consciously aware of most of the thoughts we are having. Mind/body connection stuff with regard to “Back” problems are to do with support. If your thinking patterns allow you believe that you have no support (from friends, family, work, life, even “yourself” etc) then issues arise for you in the form of physical ailments in this area of your anatomy.
Changing your thought pattern is easy. Be aware of your thoughts. Recognise the negative ones. Turn them around/rephrase them to become more positive and then reinforce them. Belief is also a powerful factor. It is challenging at first, but first hand experience has shown me that you can turn them around to help you to improve your life situations and also on your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual levels as well.
We are all a reflection of our own thinking. My belief is that before we react to the “event” (ie by exercising, taking a pill, having the “bad” bit cut out) it would be a good idea to analyse our thought processes and if need be change them. Issues may appear after years of particular thought patterns and to expect an immediate change just because of a couple new more positive thoughts is expecting a miracle. The process of change and becoming aware of how things are unfolding for the better for you is something which would need to be worked on.
Perhaps Ady would like to respond now on his ongoing topic?
Cheers
i dont think my problem has anythink to do with stress, because i am a very easy going person.i think the main cause is my job ,i am a roofer and i think the heavy carrying is the main cause.i also get a lot of excersise in my job and in life in general.i have read a lot on the subject and most say lying down is less stressfull on the spine than sitting up so i cant understand why getting up from lying is more painfull than sitting ,thanks for the help so far
Thanks Swordfish
Ady I used to experience something similar. I think laying down I use to stiffen up so I ended up just sitting on the edge of the couch. I found when I stopped being active I got the pain i.e. first thing getting out of bed then later in the evening once I had sat down to relax. Yet it was fine all day working. Years of heavy lifting gave me a prolapsed disc. I know another roofer who's roofing days are now over because of a prolapsed disc.
If this is what you have got, its going to get a whole lot worse. I would recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later.
I think laying down the sciatic nerve is shorter than when sitting, this may have something to do with it.
