Hi,
I know that everyone that has had a disc prolapse also experienced back pain.
Last week I fooloushly did a little more walking than usual because I thought it might help me. However, in the following days I had a lot of muscle spasms arpund the area where the prolapse is and the back muscles that moved when I was walking . My theory is that due to my body being in this weird posture, excessive movement places a lot of stress on back muscles that are moving he wrong way. Due to this the muscles are in pain. This may settke down in a few weeks (similar things have happened before though this time it feels more severe).
I am worried because my mobility is now even worse than it had been. I am due to ubdergo sugery next week and I am worried that this pain will make my recovery even harder than it may be. Usually back pain is not much of an issue because it only really happens when I walk or stand for a long period.
I am worried if this current pain has not subsided, the extra surgical pain may nake this situation worse and I may be in spasm for weeks. Before I had my disc prolapse I ocasionally got lower back pain where my back would feel as if it would snap. His can be quite distressing and I may not get a good idea if surgery has worked. In the end, my doctors said I may not straighten up right after surgery. That also worries me because some of the people who have reported here said they straightened up right after they had the operation. This appears to be the case for most. However, if my current back pain does not subside sufficiently, I may have more problems. The surgery takes place in less than a week's time and I am now getting a little worried. Perhaps I should not have walked as much last week?

Nothing you do now will affect your recovery after the operation.....unless you talk yourself into beleiving you won't recover.............. . Relax and visulaising yourself making a brilliant recovery. Good luck
hi
after having a discectomy the after pain is not that bad plus you are given meds to control it while you are in hospital, in your case once they sort out your disc your pain you have been suffering with will subside it won't be any worse,
incision pain is not that bad well that is what i thought it's just about building your strength up afterwards you will find that you get tired easily but that's normal, you will have all the aftercare instructions from physio. try not to worry, and good luck what day are you due your op?

Hi,
Thanks for the repky Tashanie.
I guess I am just worried that the pain I already will intensify as the surgical pain hits me too. Also, I am worried I may end up with more problems. Not because of your story Clare, but just because this dicectomy sounds too much like a magic pill to me. I mean, you go in, they take out the problem disc and then you are moonwalking out of that place the majority if the success stories here seem to indicate that people saw alnost immediate benefit following surgery. In my case, leg pain has never been that bad actually. I just can,t straighten uo. My body is leaning to the the left and the docs said his may bot resolve immediately , so in the short term I may be left with more back pain and I am not sure exactly how this will subside and what form the recovey will take place. I do not know a single person who has had surgery of any kind so I am not sure what the typical course is, if there is a typical course. One thing I was told by my hospital was that the surial incision is not very big and there is not that much they cut. The superficial layer of skin is cut, then the muscle is moved out of the way. The bone is drilled, and a tiny ligament is cut. There is not that much there to heal, so it should improve quickly but I guess I am worried it may add to existig back pain that has been aggravated due to some increased activity in the last week. As I was preparing for surgery, I tried to sort out my room. I find thatvhousework can aggravate my problem. Now I am worried that the current pain is not subsiding and the surgical pain will just add to this.
Oh well, by this time next week it will be done. My only hope is that the problem I am going in for goes away if it does not, I don't know what I will do. The MRI scan was done in late December. The surgeon said another one is not necessary, though I think they should have done anothet one just to be sure things have not gotten worse. My back is fragile, and I feel weakness in my back. I think this op kay not resolve everything. The scan clearly showed a very large ventral prolapsed disc at the l4/l5 level, and there two smaller bulges above and below. I was told they were not significant, since my symotoms are consistent with the l4/l5 disc prolpase (in regards to pain distribution). I hope this operation helps me, but I am down about it and I would be very grateful if people on these pages leave positive messages because I really think I need some courage. I need it from people who have had surgery, and are still here to tell the take. I just need to know I will recover and things will bot get worse. I really don't want surgery, but for now this seems to be the only way I can get on with my life. I hope it works. I hope eveyone here keeps supporting me. Take care everyone and may we all improve in time.
I A
