Hello

I have had my L5/S1 operation a week ago. I am a bit concerned about my scar, at the top of the scar i have quite a lump there. The scar is a bit up and down, it has a lump, then it dips in, so it isn't a perfect straight line. I am only concered because as i sit here it is pretty sore where the lump is. But i know it has only been a week so its going to be sore when i sit anyway, but thought i would mention it.

Thanks, Emma.

Hi Emma
Not much else to say other than that raw vegetables, salads, fruits carry enzymes which eat up scar tissue.
So post operation may be tuck into raw carrots, salads, celery, greens, broccoli, even aubergine (tastes like an apple).
hope it goes well for you

Emma

Hi,

Dont panic. You will get some seeping from the wound as it heals out. Its lumpy due to the large amount of inflammation internally where they've cut into you. Just think iceberg (you can only feel 10% of the lump on the outside and 90% is under the deep layers of the skin). The seepage for me was at the top of the wound. It clears after 1-2weeks and then your left with the inflammation. Use ice daily to help the swelling and you'll be fine. It will be sore when you lay and sit for 2-4 weeks from what i remember. On a long term view (im 13months since L5/S1 surgery) the scars really do clear up amazingly well and shrink by about 1/3 and for me was certainly pain free and lump free in 6 weeks.

I hope this helps relieve you of any worries. Please feel free to ask any Qu's

James

I was told today by the nurse i saw that the scar on my back is too tight and they have done the stitches very tight which is what is causing the lumps and bumps on it. Not sure what - if anything - they can do about it?

The key thing to note is if it the soreness throbs - that means you've got an infection. Otherwise, the body should sort itself out as it heals.

Get well soon. 🙂

Hiya Eemma.

If they think it is too tight and may create a 'bulge' when the site heals, they should have given you advice and options! I would like to say that this poor care is unusual Emma, but I can't! Please, go back and demand answers.

best wishes Emma

Hi
How's your scar feeling/looking now. My scar was very lumpy for at least 6weeks post op, almost looked like a puckered zip. I'm now 4 months post op and it has healed well ,its completely flat and according to others beginning to fade (doesn't look as though fading to me,however it's not the best angle to look at so can't say I look often).
Hope your recovery is going well, take things easy and don't overdo things once you start to feel back to normal.

Em

Hi Em

Yes my scar is still lumpy, i am about 5 wks post op now. I saw my GP yesterday and he reassured me that it will get better over time. I am feeling much better in myself now and am doing more, not too much but i am also trying to build up my walking. Which is slow going as i have trouble with my hips too. My GP said the surgeon had "worked his magic fingers" and he certainly has, that operation has given me my life back. I will be seeing him for a follow up at the end of August.

any answers?.

hi, i wonder if anyone has an answer to this ?, please. i have had a damaged sciatic nerve since 1995, had lasor sugery to seal l5s1 in 1997, 6 months later i had a second prolapse at the same site and a second same op 6 months after that and was left in howling pain and my local health authoroty stopped the funding as it was outside my local authoroty. 2 YEARS later the horrendous pain eased for me to sometimes just about cope with the help of epidurals. i have permanent numbness in full calf, outer right foot and outer 3 toes plus pain!!!!. around 10weeks ago i suddenley had a massive increase in my already damaged sciatic nerve, and where the usual pain is was horrendous. i could only have a ct scan as i still have a partial pain stimulator inside me. the scan showed 2 bulges at l4/5 and l5/s1, but the bulges did'nt correspond with where the pain location is!, my pain is 'outer foot and toes' and the scan says it should be 'inner foot and toes' so the surgeon said he is unable to operate. i am now waiting for another ct scan with a dye injection in case something else shows up. any idea's why this has happened anyone? i was stuck in bed for 3 weeks solid, liquid morphine never even touched it! and i'm still 90% stuck indoors and mostly laid down. the top of my right is so sensitve with pain i have had to put a patch there so my boxers or pyjamas wont rub against it sending even more pain down to my calf, foot and toes! any feedback would be apprieciated! thanks for reading this.

regards,daveyam.
