Hi,
I stumbled across this site and was hoping that some of you kind people can offer me some advice. I’m about at my wits end with back pain and sciatica and its starting to really bring me down.
About four months ago I twisted and injured my lower back – about a week thereafter I started to suffer with chronic stabbing sciatica in my left hamstring. The pain was unreal and I was finding it hard walk any great distance. Doctors were useless and it was only after a referral to the NHS physio that I started to make some progress. One night about three weeks ago, I was doing my stretches and something must have re-adjusted as the sciatica eased by about 90% and I was so relieved.
But last week I mistakenly did some hovering and later that night I was in so much pain it was untrue. Since then I have been waking up at 4, 5 and 6 in the morning with cramping sciatica again and the base of my back is aching like a swine.
The moves the physio gave me are incredibly painful to do (way more than when I was doing them first time round) but I’m trying to push through them. The thing that is annoying me is that I can’t get decent nights sleep. The pain eases when I’m stood up – which is strange as before, it hurt when I stood and eased when I lay down. It seems to have revered now. I just need to sort something out that will give me some relief of the pain. Tried co-codamol but I don’t want to be relying on them every night. Got an appointment with my physio – but not for another 10 days.
Help please……………………
Tom
Dear Tom,
I am NOT a medical doctor.
Did you get an X-ray of your back?
Have you found a position where the pain is less or bearable maybe even gone? Listen to your body. Lean one way or another way, move your legs in different positions, bend the knee, lie down on your side....try to find a comfortable place.
An example (stop if there's pain):
Move slowly and monitor yourself of discomfort/comfort positions.
Remember to breath.
Lie down on your back.
Bend your left knee and bring the leg closer to you if possible.
Move the left bent leg to the right or left and see which side feels better.
Find the direction of ease and move in that direction. If it hurts move another way.
By trying to find a place of comfort your body maybe able to relax better and release the tension.
:)Hi Tom,
I am an Osteopath and therefore can empathise with your pain. It sounds like you have either sprained a joint in your back or herniated your disc.
Good luck,
Gillian

Hi,
I so so feel for you....there is lots of info here for pain relief so have a look around if you are not in too much pain... in the meantime maybe go to the doc and get some strong pain killers...also maybe ask in the Aromatherapy section if there is anything you can get to help you sleep.
If you can manage try a hot bath (it kind of gave me some comfort) and use hot water bottle etc under the cramping back/leg...
hopefully someone will help you out with the hoovering and the likes for the next few weeks/months... i think it's one of the worst things you can do with a recovering/bad back.
I had Bowen therapy after my pyhsio...me and my mum swear by it for pain relief.
I really hope you get some relief soon Tom, take care of yourself
Hi Tom
It's like an epidemic - so many bad backs. Personally, I swear by my chiropractor. Other people prefer an osteopath. Personally I'd try one of those even if you have to pay for it, rather than a physiotherapist.

I can understand the groundhog day feeling for ongoing pain. I managed to avoid a major neck OP involving plates&Bolts, bone from my pelvis and the associated risk etc. but coping with the pain was the biggest challenge.
I did not want the chemical drugs that my pain specialist recommended as basically I believe in using natural treatments where possible for most ailments. It was a case of keep trying things and moving on to something else if it did not work for me. Magnet therapy, electro accupressure & bowen technique were all treatments that helped me in their own way.
I was off work for 6 months but have now been back at work for over a year. However I still have the occasional twinge days and find good relief from imported american pain relief items ( Good $ conversion). I have put the link to this and other products offered which also maybe of interest.
Their is alot of american Blurb but I just concentrated on what the ingredients are about and aim to achieve. There were alot of testimonials and plenty of detail on the natural products I was buying into.
Also, everyone is different in what treatments they respond to but I thought it useful to at least know about them so they can form their own views.
Anyway good luck & here they are...

hi all.
I'm still suffering - no worse but no better. Going to try and get to see an osteo next week.
I wondered if anyone knows that if you have had a bad back and it heals itself, is this a good sign that I could happen again?
Any thoughts on the subject are real welcome.

Ask your osteo to check your pelvis. Most often the cause for back pain / sciatica is there as malaligned pelwis.

Dude,
I cannot suggest anymore strongly that you should go to another physio or get an MRI done.
This time last year, I was in the exact same situation as you. Had injured my back.. I wasn't sure how though. Was convinced I had Sciatica and that because I was finished my college course and wasn't getting massages everyday.
Stupidly, I struggled on through July, August and onto September. I continued to do some gymnastics training, running etc but stopped when it got too painful and then rested. So then in October, I was just standing by the beam in my gymnastics club, watching my girls train and went numb from the Thoracics down, couldn't feel a thing.
I'd been wlaking around for ages with hernaited discs as mentioned below, was in bits and ended up spending up until christmas lying in bed. Not fun 🙁
