Hello,

My wife had a hip replacement at 32 (Last February).

Is there any informationfrom others who have had hip replacements at an early age and how long did the joint last.

My wife had a metal hip, so I guess it all sounds promising.

Thanks for your replies.

Hi,
I have had my left hip replaced. I was 30 when i had it done and i am now 38 . Best thing i had done and have had no problems as of yet. I believe it was a ceramic replacement.
Cheers Lou

Yep. She's walking everywhere. I had to lose 20 Kgs just to keep up. 😉

Hope it happens for you soon.

hi,
The restrictions are things such as:
using a booster for the toilet so you do not have to drop down to far
Using grippers to put on shoes
Using an aid to pick up things from the floor.
At the hospital they will only let you leave if you have mastered the crutches up and down stairs. Thay also show you how to get in and out of a car correctly. The whole idea is to get up on your feet a.s.a.p. They also give you excersises to do at home.
I believe they told meolder you are the slower the recovery can be. This was why i was pretty much back to normal after 5 weeks. My operation was in a private hospital in reading berkshire
Thanks Lorina

Thats pretty much what my wife went through.

She was on a walking frame (the lean over type)24 hours after surgery crutches by day 4 and home by day 7.

Hi
I had my hip replaced at 47 just over 12 months ago. It is a ceramic replacement so I have no idea how long it is supposed to last, although the surgeons are going on the average 10 year life span of the metal one. However, reading up on them, I have discovered some very interesting stuff about the ceramic replacements. Ceramic apparently is the second hardest material on earth, second only to diamond, so in literature that I have read, few of them have ever actually shown signs of wear.

My only worry is, as this is a cement-free replacement, how long with THAT last? A lady in the bed next to me has had to have her cement-free ceramic hip replaced after just four years, and her surgeon said out loud that he wasn't happy at the time, that he didn't believe they would last very long without cement. (quite scary to be hearing this only two days after my replacement I can tell you!)

So, has anyone had a cement free replacement and how long did it/has it lasted?

Hip replacement, also called hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. But recovery time is hard to deal with.

I am working for the BBC and we are making a new series examining various aspects of the the NHS and in particular, are looking at the issue of waiting times for operations. We are looking to talk to people who are waiting for hip replacement operations on the NHS about the waits they are experiencing and what this means for them.

If you know of anyone waiting for a hip replacement operation we would be keen to talk to them. At this stage any conversation would be in confidence, with no obligation to appear on camera.

You can contact Rachel at this email address : rachel.morison@bbc.co.uk
Many thanks

Iam 61 and had a bi-lateral hip replacement almost 9 years ago. My left hip is now giving me discomfort and 'gives way' occasionally. It is very painful when this happens and I then need a stick. Is this the beginning of the end of this hip? How do you know when to see the surgeon again? I had two uncemented prosthesis coated with H.A coated with Birmingham properties (?) ceramic on ceramic, although both are slightly different.

This is all news to me, I had a hip REPAIR done, as I fell and broke my hip a few years ago, due to having Osteoporosis, but they wouldnt replace it, they said I was too young......at 51yrs, so how could I have been too young when many of you have been much younger????

Then just over a year ago I fell again and broke my right wrist.
It was actually worse than the hip to recover from, it had to be operated on and pins put in, then removed when it set correctly.

Just have to keep upright, and be more careful, please God.

Its amazing how many people believe that they fall and then break something, alot of the time they fall because of brittle bones. My grandmother was 84 and fell and her hip was broken but her hip was broken before she fell and hence the fall, not in all cases of course but especially in older people.
