My great aunt who is in her seventies was told several years ago that she has arthritis in her foot (don't know what type of arthritis though) and she also has osteoporosis as well. She finds it very difficult to lever herself up out of a chair - once she gets going though she can walk (with a slight limp), she complains that the foot obviously hurts a lot and it's slightly swollen.
I've bought boswellia, aloe vera gel (to rub on), aloe vera juice (to drink), a copper bracelet plus one other herb (the name of which i can't remember). Nothing has done any good. We've tried acupuncture for it as well.
I've read a few threads on remedies for arthritis but to be honest I'm not entirely sure it's arthritis - after all her foot hasn't responded to anything.
Can anyone here give any advice or advise on another remedy we can try. I'd be really grateful.

Has she seen her GP recently? If it's some years since she was told she had arthritis in her foot, it might be a good idea to get an up to date diagnosis from a qualified person.

I agree with holistic that it might be an idea for her to visit her gp for a check-up.
If it IS arthritis then a high-dose glucosamine supplement should help.

The original diagnosis was done by the GP and we've been back several times but the only thing that has been prescribed or suggested is ibuprofen gel to rub on. Since nothing has worked I'm a bit suspicious about the diagnosis - maybe the doctor is right but somrtimes I think it's just too easy for them to sit there and say it's arthritis or it's a virus or whatever. They dont have to actually do anything then.

I believe tests can be done for arthritis, but I can't remember whether it's a blood test, urine sample, or what. Certainly a more accurate diagnosis can be made this way. There are also X rays, which can give an indication, or you could ask for referral to a specialist.
My recommendation would be to first of all seek medical advice from the GP. Should you also wish toconsider complementary medicine, take a look here at the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, on the left of the page you'll find a link to Find a Herbalist:

Arthritis may, however, be something to be 'managed' as opposed to 'cured'.

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions. I'll follow them up. I'll be taking my great aunt to the GP anyway in a week or so for the result of a scan so will ask about a blood/urine test for the arthritis. I've just find that you have to find out info out for yourself nowadays and then push to have things done.

Firstly well done Happygirl on helping your great aunt, and yes you are correct. I am working more and more with elderly and disabled people and find it quite unbelieveable that the GP's diagnosis is "It's your age" or "Well, what do you expect at your age"... we are an ageing population and there are often ways to help improve comfort or help with the illnesses. I would say about arthritis tho - check the affect of diet, it can be a big help to eat the right foods, best wishes.
