did anyone else suffer when they gave up,and do you think if i stop ill feel better
thanks in advance for any advice
Hi,
I can only share how I gave up smoking, and what worked for me may not work for you. For me, I believe the first step is to take responsibility for your smoking because whatever technique you use if you don't take responsibility you can blame the technique for not working.
The next rule, if you have 1 smoke, you are still a smoker. The brain will work overtime to try and make you think that having 1 or 2 won't do any harm. But if you compromise you will never stop.
Next is smoking friends and family, that's the killer because you will feel you're at fault for avoiding them and their horrible smoke.
Stop smoking for you and for your health.
My lungs are damaged now, nothing will fix them.
The only people to benefit from my smoking were the shareholders of the tobaco company, do you want to die for them?
Myarka.
thankyou Myarka for replying ,
im sorry to hear your lungs are damaged, how long ago did you give up,do you feel any better at all for giving up?
Hi mariesuzi,
Yes I feel a lot better for giving up nearly 5 years ago. When I smoked being puffed out was a bad experience now it feels good to feel alive.
Since giving up smoking I've taken up karate and do about 6 hours training a week, I use an inhaler to help me breath while training. So health wise I'm far better off then when I was smoking, in fact if I had continued, my lungs would have gradually got worse.

wow thats really encouraged me now to stop,,and i am going to tomm, smoking my last ciggi before bed,, i read on line that the coughing could last many weeks after stopping and thats what happened last time i stopped so i started again thinking id feel better ,,stupid i know,,but this time ill stick with it however much i cough cos bound to stop coughing one day
thankyou very much for adivice
best of luck mariesuzi....i think maybe you could think about the coughing as your lungs getting rid of all the bad stuff and making you healthy again....you will be glad of each cough then 🙂
there are a few websites you can join when wanting to give up smoking, quitnet was one (hope i am allowed to mention that?) they send encouraging emails etc...
let us know how you get on.... I am also a smoker so i know how tough it is to give up....I was thinking about trying EFT and hypnotherapy....might be worth looking into....
I found getting through the first 2 weeks is the hardest. Do you drink green tea? Because if you get the craving, make some tea and have a cup everytime you crave.
A lot of people don't realise that there are 2 addictions, the habbit of smoking, i.e. the thing you do with your hands and the nicotine addiction. Once you've broken the connection between the 2, then it gets easier.
Give yourself a reward at the end of the first day, then at the end of the first month, 6 months and then each year. The more you save the better the reward. I paid for my broadband with mine. Put a notice on the wall in big letters saying "I gave up smoking 7/10/2008", and when you get tempted, look at it.
If you want PM me tomorrow night and let me know how you got on?
Myarka.
yes ill do that thankyou very much,,i got an email tho saying as im a new member i cant send private messages yet,,but maybe by tomm ill beable to as it said after ive posted a few times i can,,
im quite looking forward to stopping now,
i dont drink the green tea i tried it once but didnt like it,,im stacked up with mints for tomm,,,
im going to do stop forever this time
thankyou very much beautystudent
ive got the patches to try ,,not tried them before,,but hopefully they will help
yep ill keep thinking good things about my coughing,,
ill let you know how it goes
hi mariesuzi....i once heard that the patches were full of sugar....a dad of my friend used the strongest ones for ages as he thought he needed it but it gave him big trouble (diabetes, I'm told)....i don't know how much was down to the patches etc, but be careful to follow the directions and speak to a chemist if you have any concerns....
I don't know "how true" that is and I don't mean to scare you but it's better to err on the side of caution.
oh i didnt know about that with patches im only going to use them for the first week then try and do without them,
but thanks very much for telling me that
well i don't know how true it is.... and maybe i'm spreading vicious rumours lol, best to check it out for yourself.
my dad was a 40 a day smoker and read the alan carr book which helped him so much. he read the whole thing then read a paragraph or two when ever he was craving one... plus he kept asking me for a smoke and then breaking it in front of me which gave him immense pleasure lol
i read the alan car book but i was young then so didnt really take in much what he said but think ill get the book again
your dad did very well 🙂
it is you who can really decide whether or not you will stop smoking. if you want to live longer you have to use your mind. you should think about what will happened to you. think wisely. do you love your family? do you have children? are you married? do you love your partner or your parents? think about them. if you want to spend more years with them you better quit smoking.
thankyou burnz
every thing you say is true,, ive stopped now,,know that sounds silly after only stopping this morning but thats how determined i am,, my mum died ages 52 with emphasemia and my brothers just been told he has it, my sister who died in march also had it,, so i think that tells me something,
felt good getting up this morning and not lighting up,,
