RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
Hiya shortie, it's not easy is it...I've given up a few times;), I am planning on trying again early this year but I haven't set a date or anything, last time I quit I used patches which really helped, I've also bought myself a copy of Alan Carrs book which I've heard is really good, although I must confess I haven't got past the first page yet:eek:
Good luck, I may even join you[sm=cool-smiley-027.gif]

Perhaps we could give up together - perhaps I will get some patches tomorrow.
We could report to each other daily???

hi shortie.. hi amy 🙂
i'm trying to give up smoking also (new year and all that).. i tried last summer but only lasted for a month.. i was doing great.. right up to the point where i went out for a drink.. (just one i thought)
so far it's been okay this time.. i've lasted the fulltwo days and don't feel bothered by it (yet).. i decided not to use the patches this time because i think they make the process alot harder and you have to eventually wean yourself off them too.. yes, they take the edge off the cravings but you're still putting the nicotene into your body and so you continue to crave it..
if you do decide to use the patches i'd recommend that you make an appointment with the nurse at your GP surgery.. that way you'll get them for free because they're quite expensive to buy yourself.. it would probably work out cheaper to smoke!!
as far as tips go, just keep yourself busy.. get out in the fresh air or do some exercise.. i've got my abflex set up in the bedroom so if i get a bad craving i can go and do 20 sit ups instead.. and think of the pros of giving up, they're a good incentive.. you'd have loads more money to spend for starters.. do you know i worked out that my partner and i were spending at least £2,400 a year on cigarettes.. isn't that disgusting!!
another pro is not smelling like a dirty old ashtray.. honest to god i'm sitting here in a hoody that i wore a few days ago and it absolutely reeks of smoke!!
good luck with it anyway.. hope it all goes well for you, just stick with it..

It isn't easy to stop and I tried many times.5 years ago I went to the health visitor and she was running the Ziban programme I got that, and I'm still a non smoker, I quit at 12 o'clock on 11th March 01. A shock death in the August and my being on my own for a whole month could have made me restart but I didn't, I still had the odd craving and do confess to having the odd drag off a pals fag but ohhhhhhh my god how ever I smoked those things I'll never know because they tasted some kind ofrotten ! ;)lyn
RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
Good.. the first step in the right direction.. we stopped at midnight old years eve, threw out cigs, lighters and ashtrays.
Been keeping busy and everytime I feel like a puff I bursh my teeth or chew gum.
Must admit, my mood seems sad, like I lost a friend.. lol.
keep at it people,

I'm giving up drinking. I've set myself 2 months as a goal to start with.
When I was giving up smoking I made it virtually impossible for me to smoke. If gave in and bought a pack of cigarettes I would smoke one and throw all the rest in a public bin - immediately. This soon taught me it was a really expensive habit.
Good luck, it really is worth the effort.
RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
Tip; just give up on one thing at a time it will give you a better chance of success. That goes with dieting too, as it is the withdrawel symptoms that make u feel crappy.;)lyn
RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
Shortie - Don't look at it as a failure, it's just a glitch, there's no shame in it, so, you smoked again, but you gave up and you can do it again, brace yourself, prepare yourself, then do it, take every day one day at a time, for each day you don't, congratulate yourself cause you're a non-smoker.
RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
I started today at quiting smoking, its now3pm and Ive alreadygot bad cravings, it is very hard isnt it?, I was told if you manage to get past three days without a fag, it should start to get easier after that, but hard to even get past the1st day isnt it? I shall try lol!
And Im not using any backups either, so see how i go.
Hope you other smokers manage toquit- let us know ;)best of luck!

Hi Peeps,,, i decided new years eve to quit, looking good so far, hubby is still smoking andi haven't been tempted ,even withcigs in the house, just wish the withdrawals didnt involve waking up at silly o'clock ,
RE: 2nd Jan Failed @ giving up smoking
Hi All,
Good luck to you all with your quits. I gave up 2 1/2 years ago, and really feel its the best thing i have ever done.
I too found the first 3 days the worst, it isnt easy, but its well worth doing.
I drank loads of water, and ate chopped up carrots (found these helped to replace the hand to mouth action). Also when cravings were bad i went for a 10 min walk with my headphones on.
Camolile tea helps ( i always had a fag with my coffee, so it was good to easy up on the coffee intake), and a nice calming bubble bath.
Just try and take one day at at time, baby steps, and you will get there.

baby steps it is then.. though i fear i may fall on my face!! [&:]
today is day 4 for me and it's probably been the hardest so far.. i really fancied a ciggie during my coffee break at work but i had to settle for a piece of wholemeal toast instead..
TOT.. i'm so pleased i'm not the only one doing that.. (sorry you're losing sleep though).. i've been waking several times through the night since i quit too.. it's most annoying..
hope everyone else is managing okay.. and congrats to those who've kicked the nasty habit for good.. you're an inspiration to those of us in dire need of a fag!!

Day 5....
Last night I woke in hot sweats.. i first thought it a panic attack.. rumbled around next to my bed.. 3:45am. Got up had a glass of water, wondering why I am awake..
Had a cool shower.. and did some emails.. got back into bed at 5am. Woke up and my first thought was man oh man I need a cig.. brushed my teeth but now at 10:30am that feeling has not yet left me.. how is anyone handling this???
