Anxiety in all it's forms is becoming more prevalent mainly due to the pressures modern society imposes on us and the subsequent stress this causes. A 'nervous 'breakdown' can happen to anyone. Witness the number of so called 'celebrities' who have to have treatment for psychiatric disorders. It is estimated that one in five of UK citizens suffers from some form of mental illness from simple 'nerves' to the more serious psychotic disorders. It is even higher in the USA. I have some expertise in the field of 'nerves' having suffered myself for many years from GAD and still have the occasional 'setback', but I now know how to deal with this thanks to the works of Dr. Claire Weekes. Nervous symptoms are no more than the exaggerated symptoms of stress. 'Normal' people feel stress. But with the passing of the cause of the stress they return to normal and carry on with their lives. The nervously ill don't! They hang on to the feelings; try to 'fight' them off and thus turn their suffering into a battleground. 'Battling', 'fighting' creates more adrenaline and thus more fear. The old Fear-Adrenaline-Fear cycle. This cycle has to be broken for recovery to occur. Complete and total acceptance of the symptoms, the feelings, is not easy and takes time and perseverance but it can be done. jonathan.
