Hello, I'm a little confused by the CBT'S Benifits I suffer with ocd , anxiety/depression and one therapist thinks iv got PTS, I was referred to them but have bn unable to take up the help as I was informed that if I miss any appointments I'd not be able to continue, half.of my problem is leaving the house, can anyone advise me on what I can I'm desperate to be normal again thanks
One of the problems with our health system is that they expect you to do things without considering that it may be an issue for you. I know someone else who was seeking help and was referred to a counsellor but she received a letter saying she had to phone them up to confirm the appointment she'd been given otherwise they'd give it to someone else; only one of her problems was social anxiety and she couldn't phone up anyone she didn't already know... so she lost the appointment.
Perhaps if you phone them up and ask what you can do. Is there anyone else who could go with you for support, to at least get you there?
CBT is a great tool to learn to use and I'm sure it could help you.
As for "not missing appointments" that's standard practice in our healthcare system, so you would need to see what you can do to overcome that issue.
Let us know how you get on.

Ok, so it's obviously going to be difficult for you to get the CBT help if you aren't going to leave the house. What about using a taxi from door to door... could you manage that?
If you had to give yourself some advice about what to do what do you think it would be?

Hi Paula
I Hear you.
Perhaps Start by asking yourself- Am I ready for the change?
Suppose, If there is a fail safe-help available out there, how keen am I to grab it? Or Will I make my condition bigger and mightier than the possibility of help
Don't think anybody can help you unless you are keen to be helped.
Small steps
Perhaps mentally stop running the script that it is hard, it is too deep or that nobody can help me, or I cannot even get help
Maybe start saying "Yes" to being helped in your mind. Because it feels it's a big "No" going on internally, which is blocking all help and possibility of change
May it become easy
Love
Hi Paula,
I do get it, and no you're not sounding stupid.
Obviously we don't know you so we may sound like we ask some stupid things ourselves, but we need to understand as best as possible how much of a problem this is you're talking about.
Essentially it comes down to what Jnani says.
The first step is to make the decision that you want things to change (and yes I know you're probably screaming at me now saying "of course I want things to change").
Clearly, by reaching out to us here, as complete strangers on the internet, you've made the first move; that first decision to say "I need to do something about this"... and that's great.
As Jnani says, just take small steps, whatever you can do comfortably.
In terms of the taxi suggestion, sure there are some bad people out there, but 99.9% of them are good people just doing their job. The chances of being attacked by a taxi driver (especially from a recognised taxi firm that you've called up to initiate the request) is almost nothing. Of course you won't hear about the millions of people who have successful taxi rides every day in the media, only the ones that are bad... but that's the media for you, playing on people's fears for their own benefit. As for the hygiene aspect, sure, there are some grubby people out there, and most people don't like sitting where other people they don't know have been, it's not a stupid thing to feel that way. We can always wash our hands, or have sanitiser wipes or gel to use in situations like that. There are always small ways we can help to overcome fears like this, even if it takes time and we do it step by step.
I'm guessing you can't afford to pay for help from a private complementary therapist? Maybe try contacting some local ones (email if you must) who specialise in something like CBT, Hypnotherapy or EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and explain your situation to them and see if any would be willing to offer free or low cost treatments as home visits. You don't know if you don't ask, and the worst they can do is say no. EFT would certainly be able to help with some of your fears, though will the severity of your symptoms I would suggest it is better done with a therapist than by yourself (though if you want an idea about it, you can look it up and learn it for yourself on the internet)
Hi Paula,
Giles and Jnani have given you some good advice and encouragement and I hope you will try to go with it. When we feel like we're stuck in a maze and every path leads to a dead end, if we were able to get in a hot air balloon or send up a drone with a camera, we would immediately see the way out. That's what we all need to do when we get bogged down with our own thoughts and fears - go to a higher place.
Whether you are aware of it or not, infinite, divine Love is everywhere and is closer than the air you breathe and is keeping you safe. We see Love being expressed all around us, particularly in the tender mothering shown by all animals and even some reptiles. You just have to see the gentle caring of a crocodile's young held between her teeth to be bathed with the beauty and wonder of it.
I call divine Love my Father-Mother God, but it doesn't matter what name you use (or don't!) Love is with you always, caring for you and (if you get quiet and listen) gently guiding you.
Many people have found answers to severe anxiety through turning to divine Love in prayer. I thought of this hymn written by Samuel Longfellow as soon as I read your first post and then below is how a friend of mine (who had suffered abuse from her father as a child) was able to find freedom.

You don't have to fear fear
You are not alone. You are not separate from all good. And you are enfolded in Love.
Love and peace,
Judy

Hi Paula,
Sorry to here that. It is becoming more common for CBT (and other therapies) to be offered over the phone and Skype as well as in person as this suits a lot of people better for a variety of reasons, so it might be worth asking your current therapist if they can do a phone sessions (and explaining your situation if you haven't already). If they can't, you could try other providers. In my area, phone sessions are offered and are also free as part of a self referral system by a company providing CBT within the NHS system so hopefully there will be something in your area too.
All the best!
Jen
