Heya,
Did anyone else catch Derren Brown's "Fear and Faith" (part 1) on Friday?
If not, I can recommend watching it on catch up (Channel 4 - 4OD). It was a great look at the placebo effect (I won't spoil it by giving any details away), and next week's episode looks like it's going to be interesting too.
I know some people don't like him for some reason, but this episode is definitely worth a watch. 😉

Hi EnergylzI know some people don't like him for some reason, but this episode is definitely worth a watch. 😉
I can admire Derren's skill but the ethics of some stuff that he does is dubious (e.g. The Heist and the episode where he got a young guy to believe that he was actually inside the zombie computer game)
Yes I agree Fear & Faith is worth watching as a good example of placebo action - but I can't help thinking that with the fear of heights guy (and probably with the singer as well) both you and I could have probably helped much quicker with tapping - one session I guess 😉 - and with no placebo effect required, as it can work very well even for ardent sceptics in my experience (though of course in a regular session we wouldn't have all the exciting drama around it - so it wouldn't be so interesting for the television 😉 )

Yes, it makes for good entertainment, but I think it's positive in terms of showing how people can really heal themselves, and not just of fears but other conditions (I won't give spoiler's here).
I think he makes a good point with the program, and helps people in the process.

Hi Giles, that was both interesting and enlightening at the same time. 🙂
It is good to see my understanding of "everything begins and ends with a thought" and "our underlying thought patterns and beliefs creating our life experience", being verified by Derren Brown in such a dramatic and thought provoking way. 🙂
Anyone see the second part of this, on Faith?
I think he did a really good job, without any animosity towards religions, at showing how people's mind can create spiritual and supernatural experiences to the point that they can only explain things by turning towards the 'unexplainable' facets of religions and gods.

Yes I did and it was interesting to see consciousness creating the physiological responses of feelings within the body to thought pattern suggestions, it was also interesting to see how she attempted to rationalise the feelings that she had created through her thought process, instead of just experiencing them.
Mind you Derren had done a very good job of setting her up for the experiment, I was also impressed with the way that he finally outlined what he had done to her, so that she could decide for herself how she would finally internalised the experience with all the facts available to make it. 🙂
