Hi everyone
Well at present I'm a carer for my Mum but thankfully she's doing really well now. I've been doing this for several years and now I feel it's time I got my life together and get my career of the ground. I seem to be the one looking after everyone and never do anything for myself so it's time my life changed.
My background is Admin but I don't really want to go back there as it bores me. I have a Diploma in Body Massage and Indian Head Massage. Just feel stuck and don't know which direction too turn - times I say too myself do I really want to do Massage on clients or what do I want to do? Then I think about doing Reflexology but what is the point of doing these courses if I'm not going to pursue them!
It frustrates me to say the least - then I say to myself ok what do I enjoy... I enjoy helping and talking too people and I just feel I don't know which direction to turn! Have an urge to work for myself but where I'm going I really don't know!
I struggle to give you positive words simply because if you aren't fired up and enthusiastic about start your own business without anyone giving you encouraging words, then you won't have the motivation to stick it through the tough times. Or bring yourself to fill in the CT600 every year.
However, if you find the industry interesting, how about doing what you've got experience in within a therapy, spa or beauty centre? I say experience, you could either do admin work, reception work or even therapy work.
Hi Darren
Many thanks for your reply. Yeah that's a good idea, maybe I will try and get into a spa or somewhere to gain some experience. I also done Reiki years ago as well.
As for starting my own business yes you are right - I really do need to have more motivation etc and I just feel I'm at a crossroads. I'd start off part time and take things if/as they develop.
Strangely I have looked at an Aromatherapy course starting in September but I say to myself whats the point doing these courses if I'm going to sit back and not pursue them. I really do need to sort my mind out.. not at easy task!
Out of interest has anyone done these type of courses and done nothing with them either? I just feel drawn to them and love the relaxation and healing side of things and was hoping this would be my career path.... maybe I'm wrong....who knows!!

Hello LilacJewel
Lots of people do courses but don't immediately take up a career in therapies. Some treat it as a hobby and work on family and friends or do swaps with other therapists, others do voluntary work in their spare time or build up a portfolio of skills before launching out as therapists.
It's up to you what you do with your skills. The only thing I would say is try and keep practicing otherwise it's too easy to forget what you learn.
Best of luck
If you enjoy doing the course, there's nothing wrong with taking it for the sake of it.
Part-time is a good idea - but then you still have to want to do it. It costs time and money to market your business, and when you meet potential customers, they will be put off if you don't sound enthusiastic.
Whatever path you take, always find the way and time to practice your skills. They are valuable and you don't want to lose them. You might be bored with them today but for sure, sooner than you expected, you will miss doing what you do best. Best of luck! 🙂
Could be wrong, but I get the impression that you are mentally tired because you are caring for your mum.
Going on a course, and committing yourself not only to the teaching time but also private study time, will be time that you are not thinking about your mum.
You may find that the mental rest (in 'a change is as good as a rest') will result in you finding the inspiration you need.
Direction
Being a carer for your mum is stressful enough it is probably this that is clouding your motivation.
No matter what we learn is beneficial. who knows what you may be inspired to do in a few years from now? Perhaps its just not now, so don't worry.
The skills and knowledge that you have required will not be forgotten. If you feel your calling is with holistic therapy there are refresher courses now. It seems you lost confidence.
The important thing is to try and make some time for yourself. We can not give of ourselves unless we are happy. 🙂
Please don't worry...
Hi there Lilac Jewel,
I help people make decisions like this a lot and I'd like to say that sometimes we create our own frustrations because we convince ourselves that we 'must' make a decision as soon as possible, now that we've decided that a decision is to be made.
Try not to rush yourself, life is like a big jigsaw puzzle and later on you will look back and see how all of your pieces have fitted together. Courses that you have taken will have made you who you are today, regardless of whether you pursue a career in those areas or not.
I once read a good article that said 'ask yourself what you would choose to do if money was no object?'. Maybe your intuition is saying to you that you are soon going to find out who you really are? Maybe you feel frustrated because you can 'sense' that there is more to you?
Psychic readings can often help this type of situation, especially if the psychic you speak to is empathic like me. Maybe look into developing your own abilities so that you can answer your own questions?
When questions go unanswered for a long time they can cause our frustrations to create a sense of 'negative' energy around that subject whenever we then try to 'work it out'. This in turn winds us up!
Ask for guidance and answers and it will come, in one form or another, from what ever source.
You may find that having too many options is also half of your problem and if you are a perfectionist you may feel as though you can't make a decision unless you know 100% it is right and this may lead to you deliberately, out of fear, put off making one at all.
Sometimes the best decision is to make no decision and just go with the flow and see where life takes you.
Our successes in life often come in ways we least expect.
I think the best is follow what you love to do. I am also working something boring, but my will to get out of this is strong and in my spare time i earn additional money with the work i like. Hope this income turns to be enough to quit my boring job soon. I think , firstly, that it is good to place a target and than chase it. I place my targets according things i like to do.
If you are confused on what to work, maybe it is good to try different works and the experience will lead you choose the best for you.
Hi there Lilac Jewel,

Totally agree with this, from experience!
I did a Aromatherapy Course and loved it however I did not do anythink Career wise with it. But I enjoy learning new things and think its important to keep learning and educating yourself in whatever interests you. That can be just as fullfilling as persuing a new job/career,for me it is anyway.
The vast majority of people who do study any kind of alternative therapy, never pursue it as a career, or if they do they last only a few years. Two examples- I did a counselling Diploma about ten years ago. Looking at the BACP register of counsellors for this area yesterday I only recognised one name out of about 15 students who had finished the course. Second example- in my city more than 20 hypnotherapists have come and gone during the past 20 years. Most lasted only 2-3 years.
That doesn;t mean you should not study a therapy, though, because as others have already said, the study in itself can be beneficial in activating your mind and soul, and just pulling you out of your stagnant routine.
