Hi Everyone

I never really liked my middle name and when I became divorced, I decided to choose my own surname and change my middle name (Daphne) at the same time (to Laura), keeping my first name, which I always liked. I chose to do this because I was no longer the person I was when I was single and I have worked hard to make changes in myself since getting a divorce.

I recently happened on a site giving the meanings of names and decided to have a look. To my amazement, both Daphne and Laura mean the same thing - laurel. This leads me to my question - do you think it was a coincidence that I chose a name of the same meaning, or do you think our first names are given for a reason? Also, has anyone else had the same experience?
Love and light

My initial thought on reading your title line was that you wanted to know how to change your username! 😉

Replying just as a Laura, however, since that is my first name. I was named after my great-grandmother.

It would be great if you could post a link to the website you found ... although I'm sure a search engine would find many similar. Thanks. 🙂

I'll sign off formally though, as there are other Laura's on HP, and to avoid confusion.

Interesting coincidence! We gave our elder daughter the name Lilian, but she has always been known as Lili. When my wife was pregnant with our second, we couldn't decide on names, but Lili, aged five, had by then become an opera fan (yes, really!). She suggested Susanna, from The Marriage of Figaro.
That sounded like a nice - and not too widespread - name, so we went for it. It was only some time later that we discovered that the meaning of Susanna is..."Lily".

And another interesting coincidence ..... my name is derived from Susanna as well and probably has Egyptian roots where the name meant Lotus!

Finding the meaning of my name ( Christine) was a bit long winded, as it is a variant of Christina, which in turn is a variant of Christian, which in turn oddly enough means 'christian'!

The 'calla' part of my HP name however, was simpler- its English and derives from the flower calla lily, and also means 'beauty' in Greek.:D

Great website by the way, thanks for sharing Gem1n1 .

Warmest wishes- calla lily x

I am sure we get our names rather than them being chosen by parents.

I am afraid I do not like the name Katie/Katy. This isn't because I dislike the name but it seems to have lots of sadness attached to the name. I know a little of that name that died and also another girl of that name lost her father at a very young age.

I often read of tragic tales in the paper and the name Katie pops up.

orangeblossom, have you ever wondered if you might have been a Kate or Katie in a past life?

No I have never wondered although I suppose that could be the case.

I don't really see the connection though, as the Katies I refer to are not actually in my family at all. Are you saying I know about them and their misfortune because we are drawn to people of our own name (past name)?

I love my name 'Laura' it is a feminine form of the Late Latin name Laurus, which meant "laurel". In ancient Rome the leaves of laurel trees were used to create victors' garlands. Saint Laura was a 9th-century Spanish martyr, a nun who was thrown into a vat of molten lead by the Moors. Another famous bearer was Laura Secord, a Canadian heroine during the War of 1812.

For a while my Mum wanted to name me Stephanie Paula after my biological father who was Stephen Paul, fortunately he didn't as he left two days after I was born, but because of that I have always hated these names.

My HP name was easy to come up with as I just used my business name, although some days I wish that I had thought up of something different!
