Hello,

I was just wondering if somebody could tell me what this symbolises. I have been told it symbolises om peace and happiness but I'd just like to confirm this.

Also, does anyone know if this would be considered offensive in religions or to certain people?

Thanks

Jess xxx 🙂

Don't know Mike.
I'm trying to look to see who deleted it. I can see she joined yesterday, but I don't recall me being on yesterday doing any moderating, and I can't see any moderating history, except that it was deleted at 11:02 (I'm fairly sure I wasn't online then)

IP address shows Leicester UK, post seems ok to me.
IP doesn't show any matching IP's with other banned accounts, so shouldn't have been caught up in a spammer related banning.

Are there any details on the back end you can see?

There's no telling what will offend certain people. Some people make a conscious decision to be offended. You cannot offend a religion - it has no feelings. Only people can be offended.

Some things may be considered deliberately trying to give offence. This is not one of them.

The symbol is, as you say, 'om'. It's often described as 'the sound of the universe' (a bit like 'Ur' in the Norse runes). It is also a mantra in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

It was the numbers after the user name on sign up, this usually indicates someone here to spam, though I could be wrong, I have a bit of a head cold at the moment.

Hi Jess and welcome to Healthypages,

As Crowan says, yes it's the 'om' symbol, though a somewhat stylised version (if you google for om symbol you'll see the regular script version of it).

It's not a symbol that I have ever considered anyone being offended by, though of course there's bound to be some out there who will choose to be offended by it, just as they may be offended by the fact it's a tattoo regardless of the image. There's no pleasing everyone.

Certainly you won't offend most of the belief systems that use this symbol if you displayed it. They are generally not protective of it in the way some religions may be protective about their symbolism. Many 'new age' shops sell necklaces, rings or trinkets with the Om symbol on, so it's very common to see.

Not really 'peace and happiness', though.

Just a helpful tip....tattoos have emerged as a new fashion statement but If you’re a tattoo lover and constantly getting yourself tattooed, then you must get aware of its side effects as well....
