I have had for the past 7 years an odour/smell, which comes from my nose, sometimes with associated headache and stuffiness but I would not call it blocked. other people cannot smell it the odour, so my wife tells me, just me.
Some days it is worse than others, I have periods when its really bad and some days when it is not really noticeable, when it is bad it can give me severe headaches and I can taste the smell.
Its all very strange I can have the smell one day then its gone the next, or it can last for weeks or disappear for a month!
I have been prescribed various antibiotics by my doctor, but no improvement therefore I was referred to the hospital, they also tried various sprays but still no improvement. I then had a MRI scan that showed there was an infection deep inside my RH sinus, an operation followed to clean out the infection but still I had the smell, this was over 3 years ago.
A follow up scan showed that all was clear except for a very small cyst, this was therefore removed, but the smell is still there so I was then referred to a neurology specialist. He after reading my notes and asking a few questions told me that he couldnt help.
The hospital therefore told me that there is nothing further they can suggest, and say that I will just have to live with it, which is not a very pleasant thought.
Moved to a different area 2 years ago, approached a new ENT specialist, went through similar procedure as before, antibiotics, scan then surgery 2months ago.
Result no improvement, any suggestions please, to help overcome this, it has been really bad for the last few weeks and if I go to my GP I will only be offered more antibiotics which have no effect whatsoever and it is all really getting me down?
Any suggestions please, now getting desperate.
Hello Roy - welcome to Healthypages
It must be so frustrating for you not to have had this sorted after 7 years, and not pleasant at times. Being told you just have to live with something because they can't find out what it is, is really infuriating in this day and age. Many of us here have had similar experiences though.
Has anyone suggested it could be a fungal infection? - rather than bacterial? There is an excellent article here, with parts 2, and 3 which covers what it might be a how to deal with it. I only know about it because someone I know had a similar problem and found these articles helpful. I do hope this helps you too.
Added to this I think you need to improve your immune function - too much of modern living bombards our immune systems with too much to deal with while our food becomes depleted in nutrients. This little book which deals with boosting your immune system could help you recover more quickly and is well worth reading.
Seeing a registered Nutritional Therapist would make the job much easier and more specific to you personally - to help get you started in the right direction.
I do hope you find the answer, and wish you all the best.
