"Tory peer says poor people go hungry because they do not know how to cook" -here.
Another case of 'blame the victim'. I really hope we get rid of this lot at the next elections! (Although - please - let's not replace them with UKIP.)

Today I heard that the rise in shoplifting for food (rather than go to food banks) is because of the stigma attached to going to food banks. People must be ashamed of their poverty levels then....how sad and drastic.

The government's more stringent benefit restrictions have a lot to answer for on this issue.

She has apologised for that comment.....but to be fair cooking is a skill a lot of people don't have which would help them eat better for less money.

But who is to blame for people not being able to cook?

For me the real scandal is the supermarkets throwing away perfectly good food. Now if THAT could be diverted to the food banks it would help....but then I suppose a lot of the food wasted is fresh and regardless of cooking skills some people wouldn't have anything to cook it on.

There isn't a simple answer to this problem...

UKIP won;t get in....the electoral system works against them...but I would place a large bet that we are heading for another coalition of some sort.

No, I think you are right. UKIP won't get in. But if the Tories and Labour are both racing to out-UKIP UKIP, it won't make a lot of difference.

Tashanie - addressing the food scandal of supermarkets throwing away perfectly good food...it gets worse! Today I heard that, to try and prevent people retrieving such food from their large outdoor bins, that they throw bleach over it, e.g. bread! 😮 The thinking is that the bread is mouldy.... This use by date policy is deliberately misleading - it is to safeguard manufacturers so they tend to be more cautious than would be deemed necessary.

Still on the subject of food waste...but addressing the homeless, how many know of the good work that Pret A Manger do?

It is terrible to be short of money, we have been there in our life, lost our home, struggled with no help at all. It is so wrong to be suffer poverty but I did some help in a food bank a few months ago and on one occasion watched those who had recently been obtaining food, lighting up their cigarettes outside. Not quite right somehow to my mind.

Well nicotine addiction is not straightforward or easy to give up....takes motivation and, I guess, when times are hard you need that which you can draw some comfort on.

I have heard people complain that, some people going to food banks have large TVs.... I don't begrudge them the ability to watch TV programmes and be poor... Are they expected to pawn it for a smaller TV?

Smoking? Do you mean shoplifting and poverty? The issue of whether or not you should sell your television in order to eat is still under that topic. Also, it is the nature of threads to stray from their topic.

It wasn't quite selling a television in order to eat it was selling a LARGE television and getting a small one which I thought would be a reasonably sensible thing to do.

Has anyone been watching the tv series recently about many communities getting grants and derelict land for growing their own food. It is crazy that we have allotments dotted around each county, usually with waiting lists of 2/3 years, yet there are parcels of overgrown, council owned land just sitting doing nothing. Does anyone on here know of any such schemes that have actually taken off in your area? This could certainly be a help towards people being able to grow/purchase fresh produce at minimum prices.
