Following pressure it has now been decided that a possible Sarah's Law may be mooted.
It would allow families to know if a releasedpaedophile moves near them.
Personally, I think there should be no need for this Law, paedohiles should be imprisoned for life.
I think if passed it could possibly encourage vigilantes to take action, but as has been proved in the past they lose sight of their target (a paediatrician was attacked). Rumours could abound, and malicious gossip could also provoke a witchunt. Also people with a similar name could be targetted.
I don't want to minimise in anyway the atrocious nature of their crimes, and possibly many other ways could be used to honour dead children.

My thought is that this would definitely be the outcome with possibly tragic results.
It seems to me that this government is desperately trying to cling on to power by pandering to the lowest common denominator. Government by red top newspapers seems to be the order of the day and I am ashamed that I ever voted Labour.

Well as a mother of 3 young children I would want to be notifide if a convicted peidophile (sp) come to live in my area, I think parents should be alerted

I agree wholeheartedly. As this is unlikely to happen then the next best thing is Sarah's Law and it should be put into practice immediately.
RE: Sarah's Law?
Hi,
I'm afraid to say that a country that attacks a "paediatrician" in a furore about paedophiles, is not ready to be given information about the location of paedophiles.
As a therapist I hear repeatedly that certain diseases cannot be cured. If I believed all that info, then I wouldn't be working. Some paedophiles can be cured, some have cured themselves and some are and will always be dangerous. Surely we need to find ways of dealing with all these cases.
Chemical castration has been proven to work very well in many countries. But Sarah's Law...I'm sorry, but no.
Love and light,
Christina
RE: Sarah's Law?
But its known now that 80% of the attacks are by family members or bypeople known to the child. These are reported cases. How will Sarah's Law help them?
I'm not playing devils advocate or anything like that, but there is a period of calm now when things like this can be discussed, and good ideas may arise from discussions.
How do you feel Sarah's Law could help?
The Home Office is in a state of utter chaos and incompetence, they would be the very people organising it.
Crime rates are soaring, Police numbers are low in many areas.
Don't you think these issues should be resolved, and the paedophile register kept up to date, by the HO when the prison releasing EX(??) offender informs them.
If a known paedo was in your road, what would you do?
RE: Sarah's Law?
I'm not sure how the best way to deal with this is, but how we are doing things now obviously is not working.
Would the information lead to more violence, I would imagine so, but would it lead to a reduction of the offences, I also think so.
At our local park there is an older man who often watches/lingers around the children, I have no way of knowing whether he simply enjoys the atmosphere of the park or if he is a serial offender, now if I had access to any available information and he had offended I would not attack him, but the community would be able to police him themselves, something which nobody is doing now.
Would it be possible to grade offenders so only serial or serious offenders information being available to the public.
I own a business and we work with children, a police check on an employee can take up to6 months to be processed (not by us)and then of course it is only valid for that point in time and so any offences after the check are not known until the next check.
We put the safety of children absolutely first and I would be devasted if any child can to harm during our care, surely at a minimum organisations working with children should have continuous access to any data held, even if not the details just the fact that there have been issues.
Sherringham- With regard to abuse within the family I think the main plus point of Sarahs Law would be the deterant factor - and this would help all victims.
In answer to your question, I would watch -watch -watch something that I wouldn't know to do if I wasn't aware.
You are right this subject is long overdue for action but I agree with Sunanda this is just a brownie points issue for blair!!

RE: Sarah's Law?
I've just read yesterdays news of the world...admittidly it's trashy & you can say "Take what it says with a pinch of salt" BUT on the front cover theres a photo of 2 KNOWN child monsters (sorry..I've forgotton how to spell the correct term..honest) sitting in the park FILMING little girls playing....the questionyou have to wonder is would those childrens mothers & fathers allow their kids to play happily whilst 2 perverts watched, ..let alone filmed.!! There's actually quite few reports in the news of the world who I think are promoting Sarah's law but its a TRUE and real fact that these people are just left to mingle with children, I'm often shocked at how little there prison time is also.....if a pervert moved into my neighborhood I'd want to know...not to terrorise anyone but to keep my children safe...nuff said[:'(]

RE: Sarah's Law?
Hi Amy,
Absolutely,
Essentially children should be able to play without them or their parents worrying who is watching them.
I think the tabloid papers article is a little convinient given the current goverments pledge but then thats just me being suspicious.
Ultimately these monsters shouldn't be in our communities - but if they are and the authorities haven't got the resources to watch them then parents have to know, it's the only way to keep our kids safe.

Absolutly, do you remember that documentry a few years back, some of these people who are known for what they are seriously believe the don't do anything wrong, they play on it, look for sympathy, it's not their fault..they just love children[:'(]..it makes me feel really really ill

RE: Sarah's Law?
with regards to chemical castration that may stop them forthe short time however it does not stop them planning and nuturing someone else to do the work for them
RE: Sarah's Law?
I personally beleive that if these people where named & shamed then it may be less of a problem, people say it will be worse because they'll go 'under ground'...but I would say they are already, the only threat is a mild prison sentance (sp)
xx
RE: Sarah's Law?
I think pushing for a sensible jail sentance is the way forward. Remember these people who would be 'known' to you have already been in jail, obviously not rehabilitated or even fit to be in the community, or even contrite.
No one is sure whether chemical or physical castration would work, as alot is in their minds, and women arechild sex offenders too.
As Sunanda said 'Brownie points for Blair', not a solution, just a sticking plaster.
RE: Sarah's Law?
If you plug 'child molester registry' into google you'll find a zillion such sites here in the states. I've looked around my neighborhood, and there were a few. My friend, who has a daughter, also looked into it. I can't say it's done much for us one way or another. I guess it's good to know which houses not to send your little fundraiser to, but even when you know where they are...what's to stop the 'criminal' anyway?
RE: Sarah's Law?
Well so far this government has computer systems that:
Can't find absent fathers to collect Child Maintenance
Has given criminal records (in England & Wales) to innocent people
That has lost an unknown number of convicted foreign nationals after their release from prison
locally I continue to get Council Tax demands quoting that my children are still living with me, despite the fact they both moved out and have been responsible for their own Tax for their own flats to the same Council for over two years.
Do you really think it's wise to let central or local government attempt to go public with a paedophile register?
