Hello,

I have just spent the last hour reading the face book thread. I must say after looking at some of the links and reading some of the members input I have learnt quite a bit! so thanks everyone for enlightening me on Islam and what it's all about.

I followed a link which took me to a site called this is London which is part of The Evening standard and was horrified to have just seen this on the front page: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23851512-muslim-pupils-taken-out-of-music-lessons-because-islam-forbids-playing-an-instrument.do#readerComments

Was anyone aware this was going on? I find it very sad.

Rosie.

Another newspaper misreporting to stir up views against muslims.

Sure there are some that don't allow music, but there are many other religions including Christian like the Plymouth Brethren.

So I can only see this article as being motivated by creating prejudice by highlighting differences.

I don't know how many people remember Cat Stevens who converted to Islam, has only just released an album. There are many other famous muslim celebs, just as there are from other cultures and religions.

Here is a link to an Islamic music resource

So why highlight the differences?

Have you ever listened to the racket that kids make when playing the recorder? Maybe this 10% of Muslims are onto something...

In fact, in many ways, I wish my other half would have similar feelings, because then I wouldn't have to put up with him listening to Tupac and Elvis Presley.

I have a friend who is Plymouth Brethren, and her whole family are very musical, I know sometimes they will sing without instruments so that the true voice really comes through, but then the next song will be backed by instruments again.

How dull life would be without music, it's the poor children I feel sorry for. This has really surprised me.

In today's world this is quite some major story!
“One” whole child – being permanently excluded from music lessons on religious grounds… is frankly terrible, outrageous and most certainly ungrateful!

Whatever next, a religion that denies a child that needs one – the benefit of a blood transfusion… I reckon that’ll happen one day soon too (but I suppose that won't be anywhere near as bad). 😮

What with one brother practicing the saxophone, another one taking up drums and me squeaking out 'Speed Bonny Boat' on the recorder, all of us in different parts of the house, I'm surprised my parents didn't convert to that form of Islam.

EEee, don't joke about it Roger. As a child I saw another child in hospital who was dying because the JW parents wouldn't permit it to have a blood transfusion, much to all the doctors and nurses distress (and the distress of all the other children on the ward). Something I won't forget in a hurry.

It's outrageous isn't it. Personally, I think the surgeons should over ride their "religious" decision.

I agree - it IS sad that some children are missing out on music. It's a shame that religious beliefs can deprive any children of anything so life-affirming (though, clearly, it's much, much worse when they deprive a child of something life-SAVING).

Having said that, this mustn't be blown out of proportion as it affects only a small minority. As has been pointed out, Islam has a long tradition of fantastic music-making, both secular and religious. Musicians such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan have bridged those two traditions, and of course there are many Islamic musicians in the modern styles. Richard Thompson, a great rock guitarist and a Muslim, recently curated the South Bank Meltdown festival in London and included a night of hardcore Islamic punk (if you think you've got the stomach for it, try Googling Taqwacore - the name given to that style of music - and seeking out some Youtube video!).

Giles, I don't think Roger was joking. He's as distressed as you are. He just puts things differently!

This particular case is an excellent case of social conditioning, not much else. Comletely agree with Nick.
Indian classical music is a fine example of muslim participation on the music front. which is more than ample and of highest quality. Very estatic spiritual music like naat, qwaali, khyal(very often used to go deeper into meditation)etc has their root in Muslim experience

Giles, You've been reading my posts for years mate, did you honestly think I was making a joke?
Some Irony – yes,
A little Sarcasm – perhaps a modicum
…but comedy Giles, no my friend! And I'm so sorry that you had to witness such an event.

My point was – Yes this ‘ONE’ child is being denied the joy of music because of a strange version of the Muslim faith… but that there are genuinely many children being denied not just music – but life itself under the guise of a Christian religion… Where are the outraged voices on that? Where are the banner headlines that start with the term “Christian” for that particular horror show!

Don't get me wrong, I love music, I think music kept me sane through my youth, I still play a musical instrument now, but perspective needs to be maintained, that article talks about huge numbers of puplis, yet even it finally admits that it is one 5 yr old girl that is permanently excluded... - One!

Yet all this hoo-haaa and blanket term "Muslim"... And so the people stay confused about what’s important and what isn’t…Makes me puke frankly!

Today a 15year old was stabbed to death on his way to School…& we’ll add him to the list of "Oh well, we couldn’t do nuffin’ about it… Let’s rant on some more about Muslims eh" etc..

It isn't just one child though, in the thisislondon article the lady is talking about her class which mentions only one child, but in this Telegraph article it clearly says "a number of schools".

I think the reason Muslims are highlighted quite a bit is because Islam is so backward and controversial, far more than any of the other religions. See below.
