Today the MBA have turned down the motion of doctor assisted vountary euthanasia by 65 to 35.

I fully appreciate that it is not a basic tenet of medicine to have to kill your patient deliberately.

The MBA also wish to try to improve the palliative care of people reaching the end of their lives, to enable a less painful and undignified end.

Do you feel that Dignitas has got it right, and can provide what may be seen by some as a haven to escape to die in, when life is intolerable.

Do you think people whoenable people to reach Dignitas as killers or as loving support in someone elected last moments.

Religious issues aside maybe? Mods is that ok? what are your views? for yourself and for others, as a parent of a sick child or as the mature offspring of a sick parent, or peer of partners , siblings etc?

Hi Sherringham

I wonder if you could possibly give some further information, like links to your sources, and perhaps a little about Dignitas ... what, where etc , and again a link or two. Some may already know, and some may not. 😉

Religious side issues aside? I guess I'd better check that out for you, but I don't see why any subject should not be discussed here, so long as it is sensitively handled, which certainly seems to be the case in you asking the question. Thank you.

What an emotive question, well done.
Keeping religion out of it, I personally think we need to do a lot more to "care for" the dying. More hospices andbetter education about supportinga dying person. I found a quote from Dame Cicely Saunders who founded St Christopher's Hospice in London "If one of our patient requests euthanasia, we are not doing our job.....We are not so poor a society that we cannot afford time and trouble and money to help people live until they die...We owe it to all those for whom we can, to kill the pain which traps them in fear.."
Death is often a taboo subject, people do not want to know they will not be here forever. Many families do not discussor plan for the end of their lives. I have discussed it with my other half and we disagree on this issue, I do not want hooked onto a life support machine - I want a "natural death", I gave birth to 2 babies "naturally"I want the same in death.Hubbywants drugs, machines the lot so we have put my son in charge of his fathers demise. (No doubt if men gave birthwe would have had one child by caesarian section :D)
No-one likes to see a loved one suffer. I know we put our pets to sleep and can undestand why people would choose euthanasia, however personallyit would be the hospice for me.

I'm with you on this one, solas. If euthanasia gets the go-ahead, it'll be another 'abortion' situation whereby anyone who is terminally ill will 'get the chop' simply because he/she is 'inconvenient' to younger reatives. Abortion was legalised on the premise that it would be carried out only under certain circumstances, yet we see 'lunchtime abortions' and those babies who are done away with simply because they don't fit in with a woman's lifestyle.

It'll become even more of a killing ground than it is already.

Patsy.
