You've probably heard (or seen) on TV about the murder (and beheading) of UN workers in Afghanistan as a result of Pastor Terry Jones finally making good his thread to burn the Koran. Here's a link if you haven't.
Personally, I could just weep at the stupidity on display here, from both sides. How is it possible for the Afghans to justify the slaughter of innocent people who had nothing to do with this blasphemous act? Equally how is it possible for Pastor Jones to claim that he is not responsible for the killings?
How can he sleep at night?
What does everyone else think about the situation?

It's so sad.....
These people have no conception of seeking peace, they do what they do and others have to pick up the pieces.

I wonder what will be the subject of this man's sermon tomorrow morning? And will his congregation sit and listen to him, knowing what has happened because of their actions?
This is sad and sickening and makes me even more glad that I have no religion and need no man to lead me to enlightenment/salvation/God.
My heart goes out to all those who have lost someone they love, on both sides of this pointless, religious war.

I fully endorse what you say here, but yes people will sit and listen to his sermon because unfortunately religion is quite frequently the root of all evil.
where is the love in all of this?
I understand that Love is at the heart of both these religions
Really sad how religion makes people do such horrible things...

Religion in its pure form doesn't make people do these things. Human nature does. Because 'religion' brings groups of people together, even if only in an American church, it becomes a power-base for human egos and human agendas such as the Taliban have.
So IMHO it's really the misuse of religion. I wouldn't even call it religion....

I agree with you (Sunanda, Myarka, Derek, Jeannie) such heinous and idiotic behaviour by Terry Jones - I won't honour him with any title. He was warned of the consequences of his actions. Does he thinks the people who died deserved to die too? Also agree with your comment V.
Religious fanaticism has a lot to answer for - I too am glad to be free of religion.

IMO Jones wasn't too bright in what he did, but no, he is not responsible for the actions of the terrorists in Afghanistan who murdered those people. Only the terrorists were responsible for their actions.

Jones was told last year what the consequences would be of burning the Koran, which is why the burning was cancelled then. This time he not only went ahead, but broadcast the event online as a deliberate provocation to Muslims. He had a very good idea of what would happen, and if he didn't then he's even more stupid than he appears.
There are so called 'Christian' groups in America who feel it's their duty to set up conditions for the Apocalypse that will herald the second coming. Mr. Jones, either by design or through ignorance (probably both) seems to be trying to help that process along.

I so agree with that V! Condemn the crimes by all means - they are inexcusable and sickening, but please don't blame the pure source. Jesus came preaching love and forgiveness, he came to show mankind a new way of thinking and living that would lift us out of limitation, suffering and evil.

From what I could see these were not specifically terrorists (nor have they been so named in the news reports) but ordinary, misguided, ignorant Afghan men (didn't see any women taking part!) And if Jones hadn't burned the Koran, those UN workers would be alive now. So how is he not responsible for their deaths? And, please believe I am not condoning the murders by any means, just saying that they need not have happened. I'm also not saying that the Afghan mob were not inflamed by the Taliban or whoever - but I do deplore this blanket use of the word 'terrorist'. We are all human beings.

Hi Sunanda,
I'm not in "correction mode" or anything, but "informing mode". 🙂 Now, who they were I don't know for sure any more than you do, nor do I condone the Koran burning (even if it led to no trouble of course!). But while I can't give links now, or there's no need to take the trouble of tracking them down, at the time within 24 hours I did read here or there, but specifically recall watching on TV (probably BBC) that "ordinary Afghan men" were not behind it, and that it was a Taliban attack. No proof that I recall as I didn't pay much heed. And some might say it doesn't matter who they were.
That's why I briefly posted though here on the 'religion subject'. Extremists on one (American) side, and religious extremists (so it was said) on the Afghan side. There's probably not always a firm dividing line between some "Afghan men" and the Taliban anyway though?
Extremism! Dontcha loathe it? And the Taliban were originally created by Saudi extremists, of all people, within the Afghan refugee camps of Paakistan.

I think Pastor Jones is responsible for inflaming the situation by burning a scripture revered by over a billion people on this planet as their holy book. This after he was warned last year not to do it.

Sorry, but these things aren't stupid equally. The "religion of peace" is the only religion in the world where you can get killed for defaming it. Or for writing the wrong comic piece in the newspaper. I thought Pastor Jones was talked out of burning the Koran. And then I heard that the Afghan President told everyone that he did to incite violence, sadly. I'm not saying what Jones did wasn't stupid, but to compare these things as equals?
