Has anyone here any experiences? I am interested in living off the land and being free from the pressures of society.
Slightly different, but the US has Slab City, I wish we had something similar.

Not exactly what you are after, but many years living in a remote community in Scotland. I've seen problems created by too much idealism - a lot of people 'running away' from things they don't like, thinking that the peace and beauty of nature will solve their problems, It doesn't.
That said, some established communities will have probably figured things out by now - why not visit Scoraig in NW Scotland to see what they are doing.
Also - find a copy of Resurgence magazine - that used to be the place where you could find people pursuing similar ideals.
Or, you could join WWOOF - which used to stand for willing workers on organic farms, but I'm not sure that that's still the case. A week or two with people living their dreams should help you to find out more.
My son, who is spending a year in South America spent some time on an organic living off the land smallholding in Argentina earlier this year - which he found to be a fascinating eexperience.

My goodness Alison - you have sparked a flame of nostalgia in our house this morning! I read your post, noticed WWOOF and told Him Indoors! We had many happy weekends in the late 70's early 80's on small-holdings and farms all over the south of England - from Kent to Cornwall. That was when it was called Working Weekends on Organic Farms. During the 80's the 'politically correct' brigade put their oar in it, questioning the 'working' word (they inferred it could mean free/slave labour!) so it was changed. It went worldwide in 2000, I believe.
I'm too old to be involved now, and have nearly an acre of my own land to keep in check but it was SOOO much fun 30 years ago, and we met lots of amazing people along the way.

That's very helpful, thank you.
I recently exchanged emails with a man who runs a commune in Somerset but he wouldn't let me bring my cats if I joined them..I was very disappointed as I was all set to go! I'm interested in finding another commune and don't care where in the UK it's situated.
The one in Somerset would have been perfect, you work during the day and manage the land, grow things, and make things with wood to sell. I think the site was about 20 acres..heaven!
I don't know whether this is the sort of place you ae looking for? Or these in Wales?
I have no experience myself other than being brought up miles from anywhere in Africa. One learned to enjoy what there was, but no electricity or running water had its limits! No doubt that isn't the case these days ;).

Yes, I remember that it was 'working weekends on organic farms' now. I was at University in London in the 1980s and spent many weekends WWOOFing. Amongst them a vineyard that I went to two or three times is till going strong. Then there were the people with the goats in the basement...

Thanks for the links, the one in Wales looks promising. I had three cats that's the only problem.

That's a very valid point Alison.
I think there are two general reasons why people seek to join a commune or other such group. One is to be with a community of like minded people, and the other is to try and get away from "things" that are causing an issue.
The main problem with the latter is that it doesn't solve it, as you say. This is because most perceive issues as being caused by something exterior to themselves and think that getting away from those exterior things will resolve the issues, but more often than not the issues stem from within the self and have to be resolved there.

Have you had a look at the Lammas Project? Here.
Yes I have, it looks wonderful. There are 9 small holdings but unfortunately they are all taken. I will make a small donation any how, as the donations go towards educating the general public on more substainable, eco friendly, less me-me-me ways of living.
Bit of a long shot, but if anyone knows where the Kew Bridge eco village moved to can you PM me, or post on here. Thanks! 🙂
