Gove has announced that all children will be taught the "British Values" of fairness and tolerance. (Which country doesn't think it is fair? And tolerant?)
What does "British Values" mean to you - if anything - and what would you say those values are?
"Which country doesn't think it is fair? And tolerant?"
Many probably don't and are very happy with that.
"What does "British Values" mean to you - if anything - and what would you say those values are?"
TBH I don't know. It's not just about supporting England in the World Cup or eating a kebab when you're wasted!
You are assuming that british values are good values...........
Can you give examples of countries that don't think they are fair and tolerant?

It is tricky question even for Gove to specify.
But it ain't that hard at the heart of the matter. Although values seem like territorial when we speak of them in terms of countries British, Indian and so on.
They are at root just values vital to us being here amongst others in the most congenial way as poss
I reckon what they are referring to as "British values" are necessarily human or rather humane values - politeness, tolerance, soft spoken, genteel, sense of respect, sense of duty, fairness, honesty, broad minded ness list is very broad but generally summed as congenial and pleasant on the eye as far as appearances, spoken word, manners and behaviour are concerned.

i.e. values that are instilled, not "taught" in classroom lessons.
Actually, Gove isn't specifying. He's just saying teachers should do it.
I'm guessing it's like Jnani says, it's about manners and respect.
They should have perhaps said they want a return to teaching "Victorian" values rather than "British" because that would seem to be the implication. Respecting elders, being kind and helpful to others, and no doubt most of all, respect those in authority so they can dictate what you should do. 😉
All Love and Reiki Hugs

Yes, I guess so.
But I think also that Gove makes these pronouncements without thinking them through.
When teachers are asked what, above all, they would like children to take with them from their years at school, it is "self-confidence" that is most often said.
Piece from the Guardian this morning:
Gove's other show of strength was the apparent introduction of British values into our curriculum. For those wondering, British values are not weather-related moaning; neither are they the phrasing of commands as though they were questions. Instead they are focused on respect for fellow citizens, the rule of law and democracy. We might ask how these values are uniquely British rather than, say, Icelandic. Or why a government minister, aware of the staggering rise in Islamophobia, is happy to mouth empty nationalistic phrases. Shameful cabinet squabbling can always be defused with talk of saving Britain and Britishness from a mass of marauders. It is also, rather conveniently, well-worn Ukip territory. Hitting two birds must be a satisfying achievement.
Pretty much sums it up.
I think it means respect for everyone and everything. We must remember that a lot of 'values' are learned at our mother's knee and sometimes it's wrong. This is why teachers are needed to instill a sense of value to others' lives. We must remember that in some cultures the notion of single women being out on their own, uncovered, homosexual men and women, unmarried sex, scientific principles and those who follow a different religion are 'demonic' and not to be tolerated. It is this that needs clearing out. It's not about 'British values' it's about decent human values and valuing everyone else.

That's the point. "British values" is a meaningless sound-bite.

Sure is.

Qatar? Thailand? Malaysia? Brazil? They don't care about various groups as highlighted by Mrs S.
How about this: http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/jun/10/supermarket-prawns-thailand-produced-slave-labour
Just been looking at #britishvalues. People are taking the piss. It's quite funny.

No, they don't care. That doesn't stop them thinking of themselves as fair. Almost everyone thinks of themselves as the good guys.
Hm. Maybe. We won't really know. Many people do enjoy putting others down.
