Can anyone tell me simply why we have soldiers in Afghanistan
A chap was on the One Show last week talking about our soldiers at WAR out there fighting on OUR BEHALF, is this the case? I am not aware I am under threat or our country by these people, are you

Am I just naive or what?

Jeannie

There's dishonesty amongst the political establishment about this matter...thats why you'll never get an honest answer and there'll never be clarity about what British soldiers are doing there.

I could try to explain some of the rationale (not that I necessarily agree with all of it mind you). But I don't really feel like being jumped on any more.

If you want some light reading, this might provide an answer for you:

Bon appetit

When British soldiers first went there, weren't we given the impression that it would just be a "hearts and minds" thing, that the Taliban had gone and it wouldn't be necessary for British soldiers to wear helmets because, really, all they'd be doing is handing out sweeties to children?

Ha!

Ha!

Well now, the general populace must be given a "warm fuzzy" to win their support for a war, don't they? I mean, "winning hearts and minds" sounds better than "shooting hearts and minds". And handing sweeties to children is a classic photo-op.

Plus, the government didn't have to implode a couple of buildings to do it!

Okay, jump away... :p

Right, I'll jump in first and say you are, of course, exactly correct.

I'll jump in second, Scott and say you're spot on.

I wonder how many hearts and minds in Afghanistan are affected when they hear stories like this...
