I'm new to Reiki having heard of it but not used it - what is it, what can it heal, and do you have any reactions/side effects after a healing.

Would it cure constipation?

Just a quick one as I am off out.

Reiki is not a cure all in fact IMO no one ahould say "Reiki Can Heal" (Codes of Conduct)

Reiki is a natural/spiritual Healing system that MAY assist the mind body and spirit in recovery.

Just to add...

Reiki works with the body's own energy system to aid it in healing itself, whether on a physical, mental/emotional or spiritual level.

The Reiki energy may be directed in a general fashion for an 'overall healing' or may be specifically targetted for particular conditions.

In the West we have a strong blame culture, so no Reiki practitioner should claim that Reiki cures or heals.

The original teachings of Usui Sensei and Dr Hayashi involved using specific hand positions for specific conditions and did talk of Reiki healing these conditions (although that could also be down to translation ;))

Love and Reiki Hugs

Just to add that my experience is that Reiki heals situations as well. It certainly changes the lives of those who become attuned to it!

Reiki is also a way of life, honoring the spiritual lineage. You can reiki your water, your food, your pets, situations, journeys, meetings, interviews, sending energy to where it is needed, a specific time, place etc. It can be life changing if you want it to be.

Since becoming a Master/Teacher with Usui Reiki my life has changed, i have changed and the way i view my friends and their situations is also very different, i can tolerate more, approach problems differently and i seem to be attracting some nice people into my life.

So do you have to see a practitioner or can you learn to do it yourself?

Still a bit puzzled though as to some of the replies. Does it sort of balance your body out - a bit like homeopathy?

Reiki balances energy and through that, helps us to release toxins, emotions, physical pain etc which is a symptom of un-balanced energy. It does not cure or heal... only the person receiving can do that, by allowing the reiki energy to go to the source of the pain/imbalance and break it up.

The only side-effects you are likely to get are perhaps a small increase in pain before a lessening of it or an emotional outburst or even.... deep relaxation and peace. It differs from person to person, so while a reiki practitioner can say - yes, reiki can help, they cannot reliably predict how a person will react and choose to release their pain.

As for constipation... reiki may ease the cramping, but a far better way to deal with that is to eat sensibly, drink plenty of fluids, do gentle massage on the blockages and consult with a doctor or nutritionist re: effects of life-style and whether your bowel is absorbing nutrients efficiently.

Yes to both questions. I'd generally advise going to see a reiki practitioner first, to see if reiki works for you. It's not for everyone and a treatment will let you know if you are happy with it. You can then decide whether to undergo a reiki attunement, which will give you the tools and knowledge to treat yourself.

Reiki is a therapy which balances energy - see my other reply above.

Reiki works on any condition and will initiate a healing cascade at cellular level through signal transduction pathways. This has the effect of accelerating the repair process. The person receiving the treatment cannot block the process as it occurs out of their control. The body's cells respond to messages, whether they are chemical, mechanical or Electro-magnetic (as with Reiki). Reiki can give predictable and repeatable results, providing it is used effectivley. It is that simple.

Reiki will heal whatever you are ready for it to. Remember it is your body intellegence which has control over how it uses the energy, not your mind nor the practitioner.

As everyone has said, have a treatment first and see how it feels for you. If you are drawn to learning Reiki it is a good idea to have a treatment from the Reiki Master you are thinkling of being taught by. This way you can ask questions and see if they feel right for you. If they don't find someone else.

Can anyone practice Reiki or do you have to have a feel for healing?
