Hello to all Reiki Masters out there. I'd like your advice:

On Wednesday I've been asked to give a Level 2 attunement to 3 people. Apparently they were all attuned to level 1 at a healing fair. I've asked them to provide the name of the person who attuned them so I can add it to their lineage, and they can't remember. Apparently it was late last year this happened.

I'm wondering what I should do about their Level 1. I've printed out my Level 1 manual for them and I'll spend half the day going through the Reiki basics, as I'm not even sure they've been taught self-healing. I wonder if I should give them another attunement at Level 1 at the start of the day, and a Level 2 attunement before I do the Level 2 teaching?

Any thoughts?

Hi Chris,

I have Reiki 3 but don't particularly like calling myself a master as I am still learning. I have only attuned one person since doing my RM in 2004!! Its a personal thing for me and I love and live it every day. I find it a bit strange that a person can go to a healing fair and receive an attunement. All my Reiki attunements were over a weekend with a lot of preparation beforehand. Wouldn't you ask questions about where it has come from and want to know the person who attuned you, their lineage etc?

Personally, I think that perhaps you should ask them what they have done with their Reiki 1, why they want Reiki 2, what they want to achieve, do they want to set up as a Reiki practicioner etc?. You would be very generous to attune them again to Reiki 1 and then do 2 at the same time. I don't mean to sound like it's a money thing but it is your time, premises etc, plus the time you will be giving to them, doing up your manuals etc.

I am sure if they are serious about Reiki then they would welcome the opportunity to do Reiki 1 again and do level 2 at a later stage.

This is just my personal opinion on this, perhaps other RM's will have a different stance. Do keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Love & blessings,

Rachel

Attunement isn't everything...

Hi Chris,

If I were in your position, I might question whether or not it was the appropriate time for these potential students to be receiving their second degree. In my teaching practice, Shoden (Reiki I) students are encouraged to spend at least 6 months regularly working on themselves and developing their practice before even considering moving on to Okuden (Reiki II). This period of practice and self-healing lays strong foundations for their future development; without these basics in place, it would be doubtful how much benefit they would actually receive from additional attunements and training.

I sometimes think that in the Western understanding of Reiki, too much emphasis is placed on the attunement, and not enough on the development of one’s practice. In the branch of Reiki which I teach, the attunement (reiju) is only one component of a five part system. It is designed to be an initiation, a cleansing, a blessing, a beginning, but that is all. One’s real abilities and understanding only develops with practice, and it doesn’t sound like these individuals have had very much of that.

If I were in your place I would probably redo their first degree; it will be helpful for them to have a teacher who actually cares enough to take the time to cover the basics of Reiki practice with them, and with whom they can have an ongoing relationship. Maybe in the future, they can continue their training with you, once they feel ready.

But these are just my own thoughts, and I wish you all the best in whatever decision you wish to make about the situation.

Take care,

Allison xx

In this situation I would tend to ask my pendie if they had been attuned or if I should be attuning them to level one or two.

There are so many ways now of being attuned to reiki 1 without necessarily being taught how to use reiki or anything about it- which to be fair I don't mind so much as I think reiki can do it's thing regardless.. And often these people become much more instinctive healers. Just that they might not be ready to learn at thhat stage, but are ready to take the attunement.

My question mark would actually be placed around the fact they all want to be attuned together. I'm not sure but I would think it's kinda unusual for 3 people to all be ready and want to take both attunements at the exact same time. More likely that someone or two people are being dragged along to make the one person feel more comfortable?

Anyway...that was my concern really. I would ask your guides if they hhave been attuned and just be ready to answer anything and everything on the day. Who knows, they could have gone off and read every book written about reiki since being attuned to reiki 1 and be more than ready for 2.

I agree with Allison. I think it's important that they receive Sho-den properly prior to their progression. It's possible that they had treatments and "think" they've been attuned; it's possible that they have received healing attunements and think they have level one.

I'd err on the side of caution.

Hi all - updating you.

I asked them what their experience of Reiki had been, and I hadn't had the complete story: they had actually had Reiki 1 over a weekend in Glastonbury! However, some things were incomplete, and when I discussed things with them they asked for another attunement at Level 1. My intuition had been correct in that way.

Their spiritual progression had been such that I felt they were indeed ready for Level 2, and so we spent the afternoon on the Level 2 material. We all got a lot out of the day and I have "adopted" them (if you see what I mean), as I live closer to them than Glastonbury is!

All's well that ends well, as they say.

🙂
