Experienced lots of tears, but has anyone come across spontaneous hysterical laughter? 😀
I have one lady that starts 10mins post treatment and cannot stop whooping for at least another 10!
It is very comical to watch, she just feels a massive urge to laugh welling up - then she cant stop although there is never anything that has made her laugh - it is spontaneous! 😀
Not complaining because she feels great after the emotional release, I'm just wondering if it is a rare reaction or if others have experienced this.
Thanks
TP
RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
Hiya
Its exactly the same as the tears you have experienced....emotional release. She is obviously comfortable with it and you must be doing a good job.

I wish my clients would laugh!
Finding it quite draining getting clients weeping all over the place
especially as they are policemen due to go out on duties!!
Sorry London!!

Oh that explains it then!

how would any of you recommend dealing with emotional outbursts? uncontrollable sobbing for a few mins at a time? i'm not that uncomfortable with it, but am wondering if i ought to be holding boundaries & recommending or suggesting counselling or psychotherapy? it has only happened once with the person, & seemed to me a natural release, but then i've read that i have a duty not to take on aspects i'm not qualified in?
any views & pointers appreciated.

RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
the whole point about what we do, is that we will release emotional charge/ blockages. these releases can be just quite natural, you know like when you feel really happy it can make you tearful, for no apparent reason.
it could also be for a far more deep seated reason. unless you have any knowledge of it, you wont necessarily know, but the point is, you are there.
when it happens, rather then carry on, as if ignoring it, i'd do some solar plexus holds... thumbs on each foot, fingers round. its comforting apart from anything else. if your client starts talking, listen. this is where your listening skills come in. and if you are getting out of your depth, thats when referral can be suggested... but your client may not want to take that onboard.
i know there is someone on HP who does work with abused women... i'll get her to see what advice she can offer.

thanks rosie, that is very helpful. it's a massage treatment, so should i perform a hold near wehere i was working at the time, or break to deliberately hold feet (or maybe shoulders)? otherwise it might feel like stopping dead, waiting for her to get her act together...
RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
oh! you didnt say it was massage, did you?
hmmm well, when in doubt, effleurage... no no, never break contact, and especially then. ask the client if they would like you stop for a moment... cover them up... nurture and all that. if they want you to work through, then do so.
RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
no i didn't! it all fit in though, especially the title of the thread...you reminded me of constant unbroken contact (which i do strive for) being reassuring.

Hi,
We as complementary therapists have a great privilege and honour to be able to work on someone else's sacred space and in return we facilitate their process of becoming whole. This may from time to time involve a physical, or emotional release of tension. Joy is one of the highest emotions and is not often seen as a release - more often we see anger, grief or sadness.
Whatever the release of emotions is - you need to hold and contain the space - you do not have to do anything or say anything other than that - and feel honoured that they felt secure enough with you to let go. It's always handy to have some tissues at hand. You should see and feel a huge difference in the quality of their energy (the mirror of the soul is the eyes - which will shine more brightly after a good release). If it makes you nervous see what it is triggering off or mirroring in you. I have heard of someone having a psychotic interlude whilst having an aromatherapy - in this case don't treat refer to someone who is experienced enough to work with the client (probably a spiritually trained - psychotherapist)

RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
Oh dear I find this idea of crying or laughing quite scary! I was thinking about going along for a reflexology session to see if it would alleviate some of the aches and pains I have experienced lately. I have had some issues that were traumatic in the past, which I know I have not dealt with fully yet . I am afraid that these would cause me to break down if I had the treatment. How can I be sure I would be able to cope if this happened.
RE: Spontaneous hysterics following treatment
hi eagleswings,
extreme emotional outpourings are, imo and ime, a rarity, so dont worry. during and after a treatment, as therapists, we advise clients of possible effects, but none are compulsory!
choose a well qualified therapist that you feel comfortable with and enjoy the session. speak to a few on the phone, even ask them this very question... they shouldnt mind. preferably go by recommendation as a good place to start.
dont go along to the treatment thinking its going to open huge chasms and clear emotional trauma blockages... go with the idea of it alleviating physical problems, which hopefully it will... the other stuff, if its going to, will come naturally, when you are ready. your treatments are in your control and an empathic therapist will make you feel quite at ease.
enjoy!
