Hi all,

Has anyone here had experience of using reflexology on a client that has had a stroke? Would be interested in hearing of your experience and any comments or advice you may wish to share.

Thanks

Hi Holistic1 - like in your similar question in the massage thread, reflexology can be used - but if there is any degree of paralysis, or loss of sensation in the lower legs/feet, such as neuropathy, which can happen in stroke patients, then alter your treatment to suit the client. Try a few simple relaxation moves, and then possibly work gently across some of the more obvious tender reflex points. You may find that the bowel point is very firm, so do a few 'strokes' over this - watch the clients face - you will then know when you are being too firm. Keep the treatment short initially - around 5 minutes for each foot, and increase a little at subsequent sessions. You really do have to be guided by the tolerance of the client.
