Hi there, I hope you guys could give me some advice?
I have recently qualified in Reflexology so I am just starting my journey. My dads friend has MS and suffers from poor balance, but apart from that there are no other symptoms. He is interested in trying reflexology to help with balance, but does not want to bother it has no effect. What I want to know is can reflexology help inprove balance in people with MS? and if so, apart from the nervous system which reflexes should I observe? Has anyone treated a client with MS with positive results, if so how many treatments did it take (I do understand the all clients are different)
Thanks xx
Hi Renie,
IMO "balance" in Reflexology is more to do with the holistic effect on the whole person rather than a physical balance problem caused by a specific reason.
I regularly treat several MS sufferers and they all benefit in individual ways depending on their expectations.
If you do not receive Reflexology with an open mind then you are already putting limits on any potential benefits.
Your friend's Dad needs to be open minded and he may be surprised by what he experiences! 😉

Thank you, sorry its taken me so long to reply.
Anyway, I went to see my dads friend last night and had a chat about what to expect. I explained that many people with MS do find reflexology beneficial, however, different people have difference experiences. He said that after reading about reflexology and MS on the internet, that he was keen to try. I found that him to be a very positive and upbeat person. He explained that he was diagnosed 15 years ago and has not really experienced many symtoms,(maybe due to his positive nature?) however, he had recently started falling over and as a result has had to sell his business (although he is happy to retire). I get the impression that he is worried that the MS is excellerating, so is willing to try anything, before resorting to orthodox medication (he currently refuses to take any medication at the moment)
I gave the treatment which I found really interesting, for example his feet were very soft and had a kind of spongy feel,so were easy to work on, also he mentioned that when I began working on his toes he could not feel it, but towards the end of me working the toes, he began to get some sensation. I also noticed that he nerve ending on certain areas of the feet were very sensitive, although not unpleasent. Is this typical for people with MS? He really enjoyed the treatment and booked another 5 session's. He was very chatty during the treatment, but I feel that was down to fact that he was nervous. So I am hoping that now he knows what to expect, he can relax more, therefore gain more benefit.
As I think I mentioned in my OP that I am newly qualifed, even after doing my case studies, which had amazing results (bereavement, Grave's disease, pregnany and irregular periods) Reflexology never fails to surprise and amaze me. So I am really excited about the results, and I really hope it helps my dads friend.

Hi Renie,
It sounds as though your patient has exactly the right attitude to receive your reflexology. 🙂
Chattiness can be nerves so it will be interesting to see if he starts to calm after he has received a few sessions from you.
Yes, I have had feedback to say that sensations returned for a while after a treatment.
Excessively soft feet can be interpreted as "needing inner strength, needs to be more resolute" C.Stormer, 'Language of Feet' so that may become more apparent as he relaxes and opens up more with every session.
Glad that you had such a positive beginning with him 🙂
