For a basic introductory book, I would recommend 'The Massage Manual' by Fiona Harrold (the founder of the London College of Massage). It is very well-illustrated and has eight chapters showing sequences for different parts of the body.
If you subsequently want to refer to a book which is more advanced but still well-illustrated, I would recommend 'Basic Clinical Massage Therapy' by Clay & Pounds.

Another book that I would recommend (for a discussion of how to earn a living from massage, rather than for massage techniques) is 'Massage: A Career at Your Fingertips' by Martin Ashley. It is aimed at the American market, but is still very useful for British readers.

Regards

Alan

I have bought so many over the past few years! What area in particular are you interested in? General "about massage" books, or books on certain topics?

Hi Susan

For an holistic approach I would look out for 'The Magic of Massage by Ouida West ISBN 0 7126 03166' or for a more clinical approach then apart from the books you have already been told about, I would also recommend 'Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy by Mel Cash ISBN 0-09-180956-8

Hope that helps.

Art Riggs Deep tissue massage is great. But you really have to have the dvd's to do it justice. The mel cash book is good.

Hello,

How about...

Handbook of Clinical Massage - Mario-Paul Cassar
Massage Therapy, principles and practice - Susan G Salvo (a hefty tome, and very good with it, includes a and p)
Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology - Ruth Werner (another hefty tome and very good)

Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology - Ruth Werner

I just wanted to echo other's that have mentioned the above book, I have just got the 5th edition and it is great, easy to read, great pictures.

ISBN-10: 1-60831-910-5

It is definitely something I would recommend every massage therapist has in there library for a great reference guide.
