Hi Folks of healthy pages,

As the title suggests im asking about indian head massages.

Ive never had one, nor had the inkling to use it as part of a treatment.

I do however want to learn a bit more about it, im not going to google it as I think that is a cop-out!

If anyone has the inclination-can you tell me your views as a practitioner and how effective it is at producing positive effects

I was thinking of doing a course in it, but unsure wether it would be worthwhile...

Hi John,

We offer IHM alongside various other types of massage as part of our hands on sessions.

As we do it through clothing it is sometimes the preferred option for a "first timer" who may be apprehensive about receiving a massage. It is a very energising experience for them whilst enabling us to highlight any areas of tension we may have discovered. It often leads to them having a deep tissue or remedial session next time.

It is also a good "combination" session with Reflexology as there is no undressing involved (other than shoes and socks!).

I have found that although I did a training course, I have adapted the routine to suit my preferred way of working and of course to allow flexibility depending on the client's needs.

I have done IHM for many years, one of the first in the North East of England and absolutely love it, I now teach it and think if it as a wonderful treatment to give and receive.

I don't really get what your question is, are you asking us to defend IHM?

Thanks for the quick fire response!

Dont worry im not asking if it is a good or bad treatment or for anyone to defend it. I think something that is as popular as IHM must be good, ive just had very little experience of it.

Id like to do a course in it like i said, just wanted to know some personal therapist experiences of it-obviously the non-comfy client can enjoy it which is always a plus, im sure in the near future i will train in it.

I'm also a bit confused about your question. You said that Google was a 'cop-out', but I'm not sure how asking our opinions differs so greatly from Googling (except to say that it would involve less effort)?

I don't mean any disrespect, I just personally find Google a great source of info on a multitude of subjects - so why not utilise it?

Unless, of course, you are actually ON the IHM course at the moment and these are assignment questions you have to write about? LOL! It wouldn't be the first time that students have visited this forum for help with their essays! LOL!

as you say you know nothing about it, but you are drawn to learning it, save yourself time and money by booking in for a treatment with a few people or offer swaps, its best to try a few IHM as IMO its been watered down over the past few years.

I have freelanced for a few training companies so have had to teach 3 versions of it in the past.

I personally only apply IHM over clothes, if someone wants an oiled version I give them shirobhanga which is oiled seated massage.

I love IHM with a passion and feel protective over it. I would suggest getting the Helen mcGuiness IHM DVD.

I love IHM, both giving and receiving. It is so relaxing for both myself and the client. I have had several fall asleep.
I also think Google is a brilliant source of information but agree you should book in for a treatment to find out for yourself.

I can assure you all im not a student, well not at this present moment anyway!

Thanks for the advice, I have booked in with a local practitioner as my way of treating myself. I seem to be the person giving the treatments all the time rather than receiving!

I shall update you all on my thoughts!
