Does anyone know if you can massage someone who is taking a drug for enlarged prostate if it's benign? Also, do we need drs authorisation to massage cancer patients for definite? thank you.

Seeing that massage is a non invasive therapy why would you need a doctors permission? And depending on what area you intend to concentrate on I would ask the Mrs first.

Just saying 😀

And welcome to the forum.

Thanks. we were taught that if there's anything that you're not sure of then to get Drs permission just to cover yourself. e.g. cancer patients shouldn't be massaged

Our trainers advised that cancer was a contraindication to massage and that GP consent should be obtained beforehand.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Have you seen the client with the enlarged prostate problem yet? What was his initial reason for seeing you? Relaxation?

The theory is that massage could potentially cause metastatic spread of cancer via the lymphatic system. In fact there is no evidence to support this that I am aware of.

I use my own judgement as to what therapies are appropriate for any patient. Certainly my IHM training did NOT include a need to seek permission from a GP for any type of patient

Are you recently qualified? What sort of training have you done? Many training providers preach that you must not treat patients with cancer. You could contact them and ask for clarification. This is a very grey area in my opinion - as Tashanie says there is no evidence to support the idea that massage causes mets.

It may be a good idea to find out exactly why this chap wants to have a massage. If it is for basic relaxation, then there should be no problem.

I know many men, including some clients, with BPH - none of them have cancer.

Thanks, no he doesn't have cancer. The massage is for bad back/neck so this should be ok.
