As I recall I injured my wrist playing rugby 16 years ago, but being an idiot I did nothing about it and from then on just taped my wrist up before every game.
About a year ago I noticed that I was getting increased pain, reduced ROM and a loss of strength with the wrist. I went to the GP who arranged an X-Ray. I was infromed that I had a fracture of the Scaphoid with resulting arthritis.
6 weeks ago I had surgery. Specifically, a bone graft of the scaphiod in the hope of getting the fracture to finally heal and a radial styloidectomy(reduction of the styloid process on the radius) to reduce the arthritic symptoms.
Two years ago I did a sports massage Level 3 course and I now fear that to carry on with this after I have recovered, may cause me more problems. I want to hear from anyone who has faced the same or similar circumstances and any advice would be great. Thanks.
Hi AST
Sorry to hear that. Well I haven't been through such an operation, but I have had the occasional RSI related wrist problem due to massaging. Prehaps you may need to consider other options to retrain in like no-hands massage, bowen technique, fitness/exercise or even acupunture.
Best Wishes

Thanks RP, funnily enough I have looked at Bowen. It is still very early days (I am still in plaster), I want to carry on with Sports massage but I am aware that it may not be possible. Thanks for your reply.
Heat packs, ice packs, hot stones, cold stones, temperature contrast can make working a lot easier. I swear by LaStone Therapy for helping with my hands and wrists lasting.
Also Temple Style Lomi Lomi uses a lot of forearm work, and can get quite sports massage if you have that background, no-hands and forearm dance do similar type things.
CranioSacral is also very light work and can give amazing results, plus you get to sit down 🙂 Visceral Manipulation too...
I found Accupunture for RSI amazing -the lady I saw put a very low electric current through her needles the RSI vanished for 6 months.
Totally agree with you Firebird, acupuncture with additional massage helped my left wrist problem.

Hi, i had an RSI problem in the wrist and forearm a few years back, a local therapist used soft tissue release on it, a little sore at the time, within 3 visits never had a problem since.

I also had a wrist problem about 18 months ago. I couldn't do pressups and massage was painful. Coincided with getting a job with a local pro football team. Just my luck. I thought it was a joint problem. I also had fleeting pains and tingling in my fingers and hands , also if i flexed my fingers tightly my joints were very sore on both hands along with elbow discomfort, I used to get a numb patch in the web of my left hand. I also used to get very stiff at the back of my neck but treating the back of the neck brought relief in the short term omly. My wrist flexion was poor on the left, affected side. I often woke with a numb arm. My range of motion in my neck was also poor, esp rotation and lateral flexion.
I think you can see how this is going and the imporatance of looking further than the wrist and wrist flexor/extensors.
I treated myself. It's seems odd how I am often my own case study. It is even more odd how a client will turn up with something similar once I've been through the learning process.
So what were the problems?? Well, posture for starters, forward head posture and severly short scalenes and SCM,. These took a lot of work to release with trigger point work. But once released the back of my neck stopped hurting and so did the pains in my fingers. I also addressed triggers in my left, biceps, triceps, brachio radialis, most of the wrist extensors and flexors. I was fibrosed in distal triceps and proximal wrist extensors, so friction and lengtheneing strokes were used to address this. To increase effectiveness I used PNF stretching on most of the above.
Hope that helps.
Kevin.
