Hello,
I'm after some advice please.
A client has asked me if I can provide her with a treatment, she is 7 months pregnant and suffering with back problems.
I have never massaged a pregnant client before.
I am qualified in both IHM and Swedish Massage and other Holistic Treatments.
Do I need to be qualified to perform either of the treatments.
Thank you in advance.

Could you refer her to someone who is experienced in pregnancy massage? It's not that difficult to adjust your usual techniques to be honest - you just need to work within certain parameters and combine them with an artful use of cushions! Most women in advance pregnancy, enjoy being massaged whilst side-lying (I know I did!). If you haven't treated anyone in this position before, you could either practice on a friend, or look to invest in some further training to enlarge your client base!
Hi Desi girl
Messaging a pregnant client shuold be fun as long as they are sitting or lying comfortably, you are obviously concerned but you say you are qualified in IHM and sweedish message..what other qualifications you need? That surely qualifies you to offer those treatments it to a pregnant lady...I would think. Do you need extra qualifications to be able to do so? That doesn't sound quite right..
I think you are capable and qualified but just a wee bit unsure because its your first time. But Its always going to have to be a first time for everything.
I personally think, you should go for it but do research on moves and areas that you refrain from while treating a pregnant person. I do hope you get more clear pointings from message friends here.
good luck
sorry to be bearer of bad news...but you should be qualified in pregnancy massage to give one otherwise god forbid something so wrong you wouldn't be covered insurance wise...plus there are points on the body to avoid that'll bring on labour...refer the client in question would be my advice...i've been massaging for 16 years and i've heard of some sad cases where a pregnant client has had a unqualified therapist give a treatment and done more harm than good for baby and mum...maybe consider doing a course then you can offer this treatment in future.
