None at all really. Ensure you are grounded and connected to spirit. Hold the chain between thumb and forefinger resting your elbow on a surface if this is easier. Ask questions initially that you know the answer to ie. Is my name ......? Do I own a car .....?

It can be easier at first to ensure the length of chain is only about 4-6 inches rather than the full length the pendulum comes with.

If you get stuck there are lots of people on here who can help and probably lots of differences to the techniques people use. However I also have a little A4 leaflet that we give out at fairs or to interested parties that I could e-mail to you if you think that may help.

Hi Star

No training required.

The way I see pendulum/dowsing is that our unconscious mind knows the answers to our questions, even if we can't consciously bring those answers up.

As with kinesiology, the muscles in our body react in very small, almost unnoticable ways to various things. As we ask a question our body will react differently if it is a yes answer, a no answer or a 'unknown' answer.

The first thing to do is to determine how 'yes' and 'no' manifests itself for you by asking some test questions. (often we say, avoid asking if your name is "Fred", as you may have been called Fred in a past life 😉 )

Once you know what 'yes' and 'no' look like, you can simply ask your questions.

I tend to ensure my pendulum is steady, look away from it so that I avoid conscious influence as much as possible, ask my question and then after a few moments look back to see how it is swinging.

Of course, if your beliefs require it, you can go through whatever it is you need to ground yourself and connect with spirit etc.

All Love and Reiki Hugs

I have a slightly different approach, in that I ask the pendulum to show me a yes and then show me a no! It works just as well for me as asking a question to which I know the answer.

I do that now from time to time to check the direction as sometimes (about three to four days before my period) or after a big shift the directions reverse. My husband tells me he has never had this happen and doesn't know why it reverses around the time of my period. lol!

Either way will work but I've found when teaching people that it helps for them to experience the response to a very definite yes and no to gain confidence .
