I firmly believe that crystals choose us and not the other way around. We are instinctively drawn to crystals that we need. You say that you feel that the energy in this crystal is wrong yet you seem determined to "tame" the crystal. If the energy feels wrong for you then perhaps its time to let the crystal go to where it needs to be?
As for cleansing crystals, crystals are able to cleanse themselves, just ask them. I feel from your post that your crystal is begging you to let it go to somewhere else.
How do you choose your crystals when buying them ? do you feel drawn to them or do your purchase them from the energy from them or do you buy them because they look nice to you? There must have been some reason that you orginally purchased this particular crystal.
If you let it go then you may find that another crystal finds it way to you. Another way of looking at it is that perhaps the crystal is awakening something within you that you dont want to address or look at ?

I purchased a twin piece of amethyst yesterday. I assuemed amethyst cleansed it's self s slept with itunde rmy pillow only to have awful dreams. I don't want to cleans it by the sun as, I know it will fade the deep purple shade it is.
What can I do with it? I don't want more nightmares and it feels such an unfriendly stone. I think I might have more than I bargained for with this one.
I put it in with other crystals lower grade amethyst points in hope it would become adjusted to the environment and be happier with other amethyst pieces. It doesn't seem to have made much difference.
I think the problem is it was happy where it was with several crystals of the same type and I disturbed it by purchasing it.I hope someone can help me with this.
Hello my name is Azuria...all crystals contain the energies of all the people that have touched them and needless to say some of them are bad energies...to cleanse your crystal you need to bury it for 2 - 3 days then either take it to the sea to wash it or if you can't do that, sea salt in water is sufficient. From then on do not allow people to touch your crystals because they leave their energies in them.
Taking Your First Step
By the questions you've asked, you've taken your first step in admitting that the sun and salt are not the best ways to cleans ones stones or crystals. I (ask anyone here) am not a beliver in using salt or placing the stoens int he sun.. and after I preformed a two year test on a very dark amythst.. here are my findings.
For more than two years I sacroficed a small very dark amythst. This amythst was broken while I attempted to cut and facet the stone.. As this image below will show you.. one stone I kept inside in a controled invorment and cleans with mineral water and recharged via the full moon.

While the other stone, I left outside on the back porch in clear view of the suns rays for more then a 10 hours time frame and cleansed with salt or a salted soltion. As you can see in this image.. The right stone which was left outside and subjected to salt treatments and the sun has faded and even started to crack in places. While the left stone still looks rich as if I cound it.
So if anyone tells you to cleanse in salt or place the stoen in the sun.. I wouldn't belive them.. I for one have been experamenting with new ways (old ways) of cleansing, recharging, reawakening and rechanneling all of your crystals and stones..
So yes, with proper care you can clean & cleanse any stone or cyrstal.

People touching my crystals is part of how I work. I couldn't NOT allow others to touch mine.
You can clear your crystals by smudging them with sage. You can use selenite just lay the crystal you want to clear next to or on top of a piece of selenite I've read for at least 4 hours,I do it overnight, selenite,kyanite and zoasite are 3 crystals that don't need to be cleared. Do you have rules for all crystals? Who made them up?
Well, there are some fixed rules, simple ones like water will damage some crystals so will salt and UV light, the others really you have hit it on the head,
Clearing is different to cleansing anyway lol

Well, I don't know who" made them up" lol. I have been working with them for several years and have learned from different sources how to clear them. I use reiki to clear mine . As far as rules I don't know if they're rules I just know what has worked for me. I didn't realize this thread was 3 yrs. old I was directed here when trying to find out if amythest needed to be cleared. There are alot of sources on line for info on crystals.

Really? Can you tell me what the difference is please. I don't know a whole lot about crystals. I'm learning to incorporate in my reiki. I know you can set them under the full moon to charge them. I'm always looking for more info.

Not a crystal expert, but I would run it under the tap while imagining white light pouring through it for about 3 minutes. After carefully drying it, I would sit down comfortably, hold it between the palms of my hands and give it Love, Gratitude and Appreciation. Then I would ask it whether it had a message for me, as I had chosen it specially because it is so beautiful and wait to see what comes up. I might also apologise for removing it from its 'mates'.

There is no reason whatsoever to not get Amethyst wet, it is Si02+ and has a hardness of 7, it doesn't dissolve in H2O, it actually cleanses very well in cold running water, not salted though.
