Hi

Does anyone know if there are any contraindications that would prevent having Crystal Therapy?

Thanks

Hello

Yes there are a couple.

- Active/ongoing cancer is a definte no no as it is thought that working within the energy system could actually stimulate the cancer
- Heart conditions for the same reason as above really, you could make it worse

As witha lot of therapies most insurers won't cover you for the 1st trimester of pregnancy either and if you are treating someone with diabetes get them to check their blood sugar levels before and after treatment, as again, working within their energy filed can alter this.

There may be more, but thats the ones I can think of off the top of my head!

Thanks for the replies.

Would you advise a person with a shunt not to have crystal therapy?:o

Also anyone with an implant such as pacemaker, cochlea etc. As birgiss said it is because of the energy field and the effect it can have. You also need to be careful which crystal you use if someone has epilepsy although if it is under control shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't consider a heart condition as an absolute contraindication, only relative - ie you need to consider carefully which crystals you use in this area. My husband has had paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and gain benefit from crystal therapy (he is a crystal therapist). As with any therapy you need to research all conditions you do not know anything about properly before you can make an informed decision about what you can or cannot consider an absolute contraindication.

Also I attended a two day crystal therapy workshop when 10 weeks pregnant. The tutors were great but the choice of crystals available to me to use at that time was very limited but I still was able to participate fully in all the exercises and had a wonderful time.

Insurers will now want to see specific training in care of the pregnant client before providing insurance for this regardless of the therapy. This is often more readily available for bodywork than energetic work.

What about someone with epilepsy? I ask, not because I know it to be a contra-indication, but because I've had that discussion recently with regards to Reiki.

As regards crystals. As Anjil says you would need to be careful what crystals were used around the head. There may also be a case as with bodywork therapies that stimulation to the excretory organs may lower blood plasma levels of the drugs used to control the epilepsy. I would probably want to know how stable someone was before treating - ie is the epilepsy well controlled. I would probably also treat for a shorter period of time. Same with Reiki. If you work from the position that Reiki will flow where it is needed and are working from the highest good you may only need to keep the treatment time around the top chakras shorter.

I know this is not an area on which everyone will agree. It is important to have an understanding of the condition and any other treatment before proceeding, that way you can make an informed decision. If you are unsure seek further advice or refer to someone with more experience.

I've thought much about this thread before deciding to reply.

There can be a tendency to suggest that crystal healing will contra-indicate particular health conditions, but what evidence is there for this? I have yet to come across anything more than theory. My own crystal teacher has recovered from 4 bouts of chronic cancer with the help of Reiki and crystal healing. That's the start of an evidence basis for me, although I would seek further evidence before arriving at a conclusion about the effects of crystal healing on cancer.

I could understand the need to be aware of contra-indications where physical pressure is being applied to the body, say in the case of massage. But let's not forget the following:

- crystals work not only on the physical but on the emotional, mental and spiritual. For example, bronchitis may have arisen in a person after they experienced an overwhelming grief. By releasing that excessive negative emotion with crystals the person may find that their body is able to speed up helaing the bronchitis more than if they had not had the crystal healing. There may be mental causes behind the bronchitis, for example a self-limiting belief about it not being safe to heal as they will lose their social security benefits, or a spiritual one connected with that person's self development. It is possible to work on the mental, emotional and spiritual with crystals and to resolve them.

I find it helps to look beyond the physical labelling of a person's health condition and attempt to see the bigger picture. Don't we talk about holistic or whole healing in CAM?

- crystals work through the effect of their resonance when married with intention. They vibrate at a particular frequency and our bodies respond to the resonance patterns of different crystals based on the intention we set.

At the same time, in the course of a typical day a person will be subjected to many different resonances that have nothing to do with crystals. Many of these may have detrimental effects, be it eating microwaved over-processed food to siting next to the office printer rattling away and ejecting a unhealthy spray of chemical dust, or having a loved one rant about their problems.

We are being bombarded by resonances that harm us but we don't set up a list of contraindications about them. Instead we take precautions to minimise their effects (if we're sensible enough).

Similarly with crystal therapy we can take sensible precautions. So we wouldn't necessarily use high energy crystals with someone who is in a depleted state of health. We'd instead work to support their overall well-being so they can grow stronger and not go through a debilitating cleansing reaction if we applied to much healing energetic force.

A simple list is not the ideal way forward. Instead I'd encourage thinking about this with intuition and logic hand in hand.

I had a query regarding this and asked my crystal & energy healing course tutor who gave me a very detailed answer that basically stated that there are no contra-indications to crystal healing.

I did not append the whole post but I totally agree with you. I have about 200 case studies from my students over a wide range of problems, without any ill affects/contraindications.

Although this post is about crystals can I just say our local oncology unit offers reiki and other CT to it's patients. Not just people who are terminal but also those who are expected to return to full health.

I do get a bit annoyed when people quote contraindications because as Crystal cub said....there is no proof that they can make a condition worse.
There is only anecdotal evidence. I have yet to see proper double blind controlled trials on many CT's (aromatherapy is one I have seen tho') and until this happens all we have to go on is heresay.

I do agree that there is a lack of evidence to support contraindications and would love to treat everyone but in terms of practicing as a healer and insurance you are bound by the contraindications as listed by your qualifications/insurance and its not worth putting yourself at risk by treating a condition that you are not covered by insurance to treat.

Hi Claire,

I appreciate that you're constrained by the contraindications listed on your qualification and insurance. That's of course not the case for all crystal healeres as not all crystal courses will teach that there are such specific physical health contraindications.

I would ask those who are being taught contraindications with regards to their crystal training to enquire with their teachers as to what evidence there is for such thinking. If such contraindications become wide-spread in their perceived value just from the basis of theory then we run the risk of poor quality information affecting our work across the board.

To be honest, I'd recommend regularly questioning information that comes up in your training in healing skills until you find your own truth. That process of questioning will make you a better healer as you will have grappled with the essence of what you work with.

Hi Sejual

Yes, I agree it's good to question but whether people are taught it or not on their course, therapy insurance generally often doesn't cover people for certain things across most therapies, always advisable to check your insurance.
