Hi ya, I have a crystal that many years ago a friend found in the desert in Egypt. They told me its quartz but i am not sure. Its opaque and pretty much the colour of light sand. Any ideas which sort of crystal might be from this area?

I can't remember what it's called now but there is a crystalline sand formation that is often sold in that part of the world. It's not actually a crystal. That would be my guess without seeing it but if you could post up a photo of it then it would be easier to tell.

how about selenite desert rose?????
I love desert rose it is so pretty and each one is a little different. We have a much larger piece but looking at them is almost a meditation in itself. It is a form of gypsum and has a hardness of 2-3 on the Mohs scale, like selenite etc. so no washing in water.
Enjoy it!
I too have a wonderful dessert rose picked up from the desert in Egypt about 10 years ago which I picked up at a local indoor car boot sale. It is a lovely large piece similar to the link Bannick has given.

LOL - I first saw desert rose in France when I was 13/14 and I was told it was formed by the 'pipi d'un chameau' - the pee of a camel - on the sand. And I've always believed that until just now (I looked it up.) It reminds me a bit of snowflakes IYKWIM.

That did make me laugh, you can understand why you might have believed this when you look at it. I'll have to remember that one :rollaugh:
Thank you for that!

It looks to me like Azeztulite, which can be colourless or white.
Appearance: clear or opaque quartz with striations
The only other crystal it reminds me of is selenite x
but I could be wrong
Looks like selenite to me with the striations.....the desert rose is also a form of selenite...
just searched a bit on the web and found this 'desert glass'
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150304209306&indexURL=
and this link also shows some similar stones;

In the picture I posted it show the crystal as whiter than it really is, its actually a light yellow and the other side of it is exactly like this photo, so I think now it might be this.
xx wow xx

the plot thickens......:D I found this snow quartz.....what do you think??
Oh Fleur! that looks like it too, perhaps even more so! LoL!
Wow
