Hi im starting my own business selling aromatherapy products online. I will be using cosmetic bases from naturally thinking and blending essential oils myself.
To be honest I am a bit baffled by the legal side of doing this. I have read so many things its a bit overwhelming. Im confused about safety assessment and toxicology reports... is there a difference? Also do aromatherapy products contain biocide? if they do are they exempt from the regulation on biocides, as i believe cosmetic products are exempt.
lol very confusing .... if anyone can offer any advice on who to talk to or has already been through this process and knows what to do, i would really appreciate any help 🙂

Safety and toxicology are different. Something can be non toxic - but still harmful. I would have thought you also needed to look at COSHH regulations as well.
With respect if you are not sure of the legal side of what you want to do, should you be doing it?
Thanks for your reply. I am still looking into it I know about coshh just unsure about what I said before. I am learning about it all the time and as i said before I am in the process of starting a business, and I dont know everything yet but I will do, i don't think just because i don't know something right now means i should just give up on what i want to do. I can learn as i am all the time at the minute.

Have a look at www.aromantic.co.uk they do courses on making your own products and the legal side of selling the products.
Hope that helps.
Also have a look at this thread. Has lots of helpful information.

this is a little harsh... i am in the same boat as hoodrose but just because i don't understand or its bewildering does not mean we should give up, just means we don't understand and need help to understand!. i have done so many hours researched 6 hrs a night 7 nights a week for something like 4 weeks now on soap and body products, getting myself all excited that once i have got all the stuff i need to make it and all the ingredient and my husband has finished making my work room, i was set to go on my new adventure... till i came across an article that was discussing making soaps and the EU rules and uk rules to do with cosmetic safety assessing and trading standards, ( i knew about insurance being a reflexologist) well i was in such a downer because i don't comprehend stuff like that because i have no confidence in that line of life. But if some one was to guild me and teach me step by step and explain in a child's learning way i get stuff... this is what forums are meant to do ... help each other. so with respect forgive me for my out burst but i found this very degrading and damaging. 😡
I would be grateful if some one would be willing to help not just one person here but 2 with this area we are unfamiliar on, and im sure hoodrose is more than happy to also do more research once on the right path just like i will be..
thank you

Hi Kristine
I haven't been on for ages and I have just read your post. Tbh I got so disheartened by it all I just took a break from the legal side and continued learning essential oils and blending etc. But recently I have been emailing the aromatherapt trade council about the legal side of everything. They have been such a big help. I definately suggest you email them and ask them all your questions. They have helped me loads and mow im more confident with the regualtions side of the business.
Good Luck
