hi everyone,

i qualified last summer as a vtct registered complementary therapist, i then took some time out to concentrate on being a mum and now i have just signed a contract to rent a room out, where i will be based doing my therapies.

i open in july and i have been offered a table at a holistic & psychic fair which is running in the building directly opposite my treatment room. i think this will be a great opportunity for me to meet potential clients. i will be giving leaflets & business cards out from my table and just generally chatting about the treatments that i offer, but i have been advised to offer something more. because it is a small venue i won't be able to bring my bed to offer treatments, so i was thinking aromatherapy face creams/calming mists etc..

can anyone advise me on how to actually make these? are the any belnds in particular that you think would be beneficial for a calming face mist, and maybe a blend for a face cream that can help skin condition or puffiness maybe?

any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi PiscesMum,

Congratulations on starting out your new business. 🙂

I have included a link that gives the info that you need, re selling homemade products to the general public:

https://www.healthypages.co.uk/forum/aromatherapy/66156-aromatherapy-products.html

https://www.healthypages.co.uk/forum/business-marketing/76747-selling-home-made-creams.html

It appears it is a lot more complex than just making some creams and selling them on. I also believe you will need to check that your insurance covers you for the sale of homemade products to the general public.

Instead, have you thought of offering taster treatments instead? I know there won't be room for a bed, but, as you have done your VTCT in Complementary Therapies (as I have), you can offer say taster Hand Reflexology/Seated Head, Neck, and Shoulder Massage/Hand & Arm Massage, or, if you can get hold of a Reflexology Stool a Foot Reflexology Taster?

I have never done an MBS type fair, but I have been told, that although they are great for networking they are not great for getting clients through the door. Maybe get some vouchers printed for a little discount of their first treatment with you, and put a time limit on it, say in the next 4-8 weeks.

Good Luck in whatever you decide to do! 🙂

so sorry for the late reply, i forgot my password!

thank you for your advice, i've decided to leave it now and look into properly for the next one. if my insurers cover it. i will just be concentrating on networking and seeing if i can get a few clients through the door! exciting, yet scary times ahead! 🙂

Advice required regarding Aromatherapy face creams, calming mist etc.. Reply to Threa

Hi Pieces mum.
Like you I am a newly qualified complemetary therapist, in the same therapies as you. When I trained we were taught how to customise aromatheraby facemasks for individual clients.(these would be used on the day so no labeling regs required, i believe)
• An aromatherapy cleanse with your carrier oil of choice.
  • Tone with hydrolate of choice according to skin type, eg rosewater-normal/sensative/matureskin types.orange water, lavender water
  • Use 2 heaped tsp of clay of choice, eg kaoline-cooling & cleansing, draws out impurities, Fullers earth_stronger, deep cleansing , for oily skin. Magnesium carbonate-mildly astringent, for sensitive/dry skin.Calamine-for delicate skin. You can combine different clays.
  • To the clay add a tsp of carrier oil of choice according to skin type, add i drop of selected essential oil, mix to a creamy consistancy with hydrolat of choice.
  • Apply to face leave on for between 5-10 mins till dry.
  • remove with mitts.
  • I did a hand/arm massage while mask was on. I guess you may have to improvise a bit depending on your work station. The clays are really inexpensive you can find them online or at your local suppliers. This could be a mini treatment that takes around 15mins & is quite inexpensive. It is what I plan to do when I visit a health fayre to promote myself in Aug. Good luck & hope this helps a bit, I also have some mask recipes if you want them, let me know 🙂

    Hi PiscesMum,
All the very best for your new business.
A great supplier for inexpensive plastic bottles and containers, as well as the absolute cheapest mst atomiser by far is Naturally Thinking - they are uually very friendly and helpful, although they do occasionally get their orders mixed up...
Recon on about 45p for a glass bottle atomiser and about 15p for 30ml plastic jar etc.
They also do very reasonably priced lables (for when you sell a product that will be taken away by the client).

Hope you have a great time
