Hi all,
This thread is called the spirit of Islam because I am hoping together we might find aspects of Islam which will show for us Muslims what Islam is actually about. For example the love and light and positivity that Islam stands for, can bring to mankind and the good things that Islam is.
Here are some hadith..these are sayings etc of our prophet Mohamed, they can teach us of the spirit of Islam so we know what islam should make us feel and how it is important. So, even if our prophet is talking of cammels or the treatment of slaves, and these things are not part of our life today, there is a spirit and message behind the words which is important all te same.
By the way...Islam did not encourage slavery...it was dicouraged, then rules brought in, slavery is disliked in islam..but it was rife at the time of the prophet mohamed.

Attitudes to non muslims.
Prophet mohamed did not dislike non muslims, far from it, muslims are not encouraged to kill those who believe different. Respect for all is important in islam.
The messenger of GOD(bpuh) said: One who kills a non muslim whose proection is pledged, will nevre smell the fragrance of jannah, even though it reaches as far as forty years distance.

The messenger of God said: No one will be admitted into paradise who has even a tiny grain of pride in his hert.
A man asked him: But what if someone likes to dress well and put on good sandals?
He replied: Truely God is beautiful and he loves beauty. pride is to disdain the truth and to belittle and despise other people.
Only those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the most mreciful. Show mercy to those who are on earth. he who is in heaven will show mercy to you.

other things we are supposed to be as muslims..and the evidence is apparent throughout Qu'ran, hadith and other example..plus examples and teachings of all those other prophets..
We are supposed to be kind, generous, mannrely and polite.
Do not belittle even the smallest act of kindness, even if it is no more than meeting your brother with a smiling and cheeful face.
No one amoung you attains true faith until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself.
We are supposed to be fair, honest, patient, thoughtful, we should not be proud and stuck up, we believe that human are equal and equal before God.
