I have heard of this movement as well. I could be wrong, but it came about more-or-less at the same time as the George Adamski sensation, also borne out of the 'UFO cult' of the 1950's. I think that the George King group had the 'edge' on the Adamski one.
Judy - yes, it's 'religion' as far as this website is concerned because its adherents consider it to be a belief system.

Yes, even for the sceptic it's an interesting social phenomenon. "Saucer cults" of various kinds had a hey-day in the 1950s. But then there's been a resurgence of the same through what are now called 'channels' in the 80s and 90s. People believe in the associated UFOs even though none may be seen and it's actually based upon words emanating from one person, such as a channel.
I really forget the details but they are probably searchable - I used to be a 'UFO buff' myself, and around the time I somewhat lost interest there was a twist emerging to the Adamski story. While his tales of visits with aliens seemed to be so wacky as to discredit serious Ufology, I seem to remember that it was becoming clearer in the 70s/80s that there really might have been evidence for real encounters between Adamski and flying craft. (Possibly his photos were found to be seemingly authentic, but I forget.) But then how to take his stories about journeys with them is another matter - whether they were his elaborations, or something was 'done to him', or whether in fact it was all unreal.
I try to keep an open-mind. Try!
I've met the Aetherius people and it's in practice an unusual combination of channelled Ufology and para-Hinduism. They are quite devoted to giving the OM-Mane-Padme-Hum mantra in group rituals.

That's interesting. I knew of the Aetherius people quite some time ago (about 12 years ago) but I never really got involved with them. What you said about them being a pseudo (sic) Hinduism group married together with Ufology, paraphrases the 'Epic of Gilgamesh' in the Bhagavad (sp) Gitas. If my memory serves me correctly, didn't Gilgamesh have a ride on a UFO/spaceship and told the tale?
That 'Om' chant is awful. The very vibration of it makes me heave...! I have lost count of the times I have had to discharge myself from meditation groups because of it.

Well that take on Gilgamesh comes from writers like Sitchin and Daniken. I don't agree for a moment actually. It's myth, whatever that is.
The Aetherius style of doing the chant is, I agree, not peaceful or relaxed. A bit frenzied in my limited exposre to it. Not as an actual Hindu - Buddhist more like - would give it.

Yes, it could be Daniken - he was extremely far-fetched in his writing. His take on 'Gilgamesh' almost paraphrased his equally sensational story about the prophet Enoch being taken for a ride on a spaceship. I once wrote to one of Daniken's 'informants' in Bolivia regarding his claims that spacemen landed there and imparted knowledge to the 'heathen.' The 'informant' told me that he had told Daniken nothing of the sort - it was Daniken's own imagination getting the better of him. I haven't been able to take him seriously as a writer ever since.
