Hi 🙂

Last night I began VTCT Level 3 Aromatherpay course at my local college (I'm also a member of staff at the college).

So, I was (stupidly) under the assumption that when it came to the case studies we could use the college facilities to perform treatments. Now I realise this is not the case and they need to be performed outside of college.

So, obviously I have to purchase a couch, but I'm just wondering where the heck I set it up because I would have an extremely hard time swinging cats in my living space as it is and it just isn't suitable.

Also, I had tons of workmates interested in me practising on them - when they thought they would be coming to the college salon, but they would hardly want to come to my house for 6 sessions (nor would I want them to, not would I have the room).

So, has anyone else got around this problem & how did you do it?

When I did a course when we were living in the USA, I used to go to friends homes, taking a portable couch that I had borrowed, with me. I didn't have the space in our apartment to 'set up shop'. I'm grateful that I trained when I did, as I believe that the hours now required for case studies has grown considerably. In the early 80's I only needed 30 treatments - so managed by using just 3 very good friends!

If you work in the college, couldn't you come to an arrangement to treat staff members at the end of the working day???

I went to my friends houses to do my case studies, like you my place is tiny, ok I can get a couch set up in my front room, but it was a struggle.

Your workmates can still come to the "salon", those that aren't being a case study, as you will need to be assessed by your tutor anyway 🙂

Thanks, JoJo. I still have the same prob with my 2 friends who were interested, though. One lives waaaay too far away for me to go to her place & the other lives in a shared accomodation smaller than my own.

And I think the workmates were interested when they thought they were going to be practised on for free but now that they will have to pay the college they may suddenly changed their mind  Obviously, I will still see if any of them are up for it, though.

Hi Jabba, that is a really good suggestion, however, the college is sooo strict with rules & regs that I don't think I would be allowed to use a room for this purpose. Especially when the college has it's own facilities that staff can use if they want.

Damn. I don't know how I can get around this

The students at the FE college I work for have sessions for the staff onsite, evenings open to the public and also go to a local charity's premises where they have a room set up. It creates an income for the college, people get the benefit of trying treatments for a reduced price and the students get to complete their case studies. In fact the college I attended in Tamworth did the same.

Have you thought of maybe a group of students finding somewhere you could share, after all your classmates must be in the same boat? Or why not get in touch with a local charity and see if a group of you could offer your services or offer regular pamper days to raise money for the charity? People seem to be more inclined to pay if they think the money is for a good cause.

You will find that people are always willing to be treated for free, but when it comes to paying you as a qualified therapist you won't see them for dust!
