I'm hoping for some advice please. I'm just embarking on my ITEC Aromatherapy case studies and one of my first is a lady with Multiple Sclerosis. I appreciate that this condition is contraindicated with Aromatherapy but I have explained this to her and she is happy to go ahead with the treatment without permission from her GP. I will therefore obviously get her to sign a disclaimer to this effect before treatment commences.
My first question is does anyone have any suggestions as to which essential oils may benefit her and secondly, is there anything else that I should be aware of when treating someone with this condition?
I'd be grateful for any hints and tips especially if someone out there has treated a client with MS before.
All assistance greatly appreciated
Happy Christmas to one and all

Hi SmellyNelly,
Another issue I have with ITEC!!
I did an MS sufferer for 1 of my case studies with The Tisserand Institute back in 1997. We were told that MS is fine to massage but, be aware of how the client is feeling, go gently within the comfort zones of the client. My case study loved his sessions!! 1 of the combinations of oils I used were:
Rosemary, Peppermint and Grapefruit - smelt fab!!
Lifted his spirit, improved digestion and warmed his limbs. He loved this blend so much he asked me to use it 3 out of the 5 sessions.
My advice is;
- Know your oils intellectually - study them;
- Know your oils intuitively - get friendly with them;
- Go inward and ask for inner guidance;
- Stick with you choice no matter how wierd it seems to you, your client may thinks otherwise.
I've been choosing essential oils in this manner for 10yrs. It pays dividens. Good luck!!
Feel free to contact me if you have any queries. I remember what it was like for me when I first started.:)
Cheers, Sue
A friend of mine has been diagnosed with MS and when she was first diagnosed I was in the middle of training. My tutors advice was to treat how she was feeling and support her through the symptoms not the cause
ie: when she was feeling depressed and tearful I used oils suitable for that condition - when her legs really ached then I used oils for aches and pains
and so forth
I have treated her on and off for the last couple of years and she still has good days and bad days but feels that aromatherapy is really good for her
I didnt use her as a case study but someone else in my class had a c/s who had been diagnosed with MS 5 years previously - not a problem and that was an ITEC course
Thanks
Thanks to you both for replying I've just finished my first session with my MS lady and she went away feeling really good. I'm so pleased as I was a little nervous at first but her appreciation has spurred me on now.
Thanks again for your help
