I'm still very new to therapy work, but I have been told that it is better to start and secure a Complementary health degree now than doing courses elsewhere...

Personally, this comment really annoyed me but just to be sure... I thought I would ask what others here thought.

So I was hoping to hear your opinions...

Do you think degrees in complementary health is given more 'status' than other courses?

If you have done a degree in any complementary health course, how have you found it?

Do we really need a degree education to be a good therapist?

All thoughts welcome!

If your wish is to secure a long term future in a well paid job then a degree in CM is the way forward. The NHS etc will be recruiting these within ten years IMV.

YES by organisations like the NHS also added opportunities in Europe as this opens up more and more.

No you don't, I know excellent therapists that have not stopped studying different therapies since 1983 now trained in ten therapies (her qualifications and effort would be the equivalent of at least 3 degrees) and make an excellent double figure living equivalent to a doctors salary, but yet would they attract the same status as a doctor? No they would not because they do not have a degree.

The plan is for the powers at be to downgrade CM qualifications to the equivalent of auxillaries to ensure that we are not competition for doctors. So if you wish for equality and due status for your capabilities and talents then a degree is the way forward, which is why I give this advice now to all the young ones starting out.

Recommend that you look at the ICM's report in response to the Lords Report on CM. Which can be found on their website or mail me and I can send you a copy.

The best an most effective therapists in my experience are those that are compassionate and work intuitively.

RE: Is the future really about getting a degree?

Hello hope you are fit and well

I have recently applied to start a Foundation Degree in Complimentory Therapy (Aromatherapy) at Teesside University, I had got myself mentally ready for the changes I would have to make for studying and childcare and so on, and was really excited about this new adventure of my life.

I managed to get the ball rolling for the funding of the course, and then the phone call came............... "Sorry there isn't enough people on the course so its not running, possibly will be running one from Hartlepool in February, thanks for enquiring"

GUTTED!!!

I have looked for other courses that are close to me and so far I have got a blank.

If anyone could maybe point me in the right direction for degree's in Complimentory Therapy I would be very greatful.

Hope to hear from you soon
Take care

Well Yorkshire is a long way away but I do know that Anglia Poly run a degree course in Chelmsford, Essex. The lady that developed the degree course is a very experienced teacher and has done a lot of work with cancer patients. Probably a good idea to check out other uni's on the internet and/or the library.
