Hi Oakapple,

Our environment is warming up, I don't think there's much argument about that. And the causes of global warming, yes, are anthropogenic but it is our ability to cooperate that will, I believe, enable us to survive as a species.

There is no fact, scientific or otherwise, that dictates disaster. Our consciousness, language and conceptual abilities have enabled social cooperation that has resulted in our species' success to date. Our ability to problem solve, communicate and cooperate has built social groups that have enabled their weaker members to survive and "escape the tyranny of natural selection" at least since the dawn of modern man. There is no reason why, as a species, we cannot cooperated to enable survival that continues to result in "evolution" that saves our skins without Darwinian mechanisms (natural selection) that weed out those unfit for survival.

OK...not fact, perhaps.....but evidence that a natural E.L.E will happen in the very near future. These events have happened at regular intervals throughout history and there is nothing that we can do to stop these events occuring.

They range from volcanic eruptions to meteorite strikes.....now THAT is natural selection and the weak and infirm will probably not survive these events.

It's at these tragic times that only the strong survive.

I feel sorry for science and the theory of prove and disprove....It takes away.... Belief.....and the theory of just trusting in your own personal God.

Cooporation makes us strong and social cooperation acts to very much reduce selective pressure from disease and predation in humans. Random events like an earthquake are only going to have a selective influence on the gene pool in a population if some people survive because they are better at coping with the problems caused by the disaster. And this ability has to be genetically determined and inheritable.

If you are saying that a disaster of massive proportions is going to kill all humans on the planet, then you could say that would have evolutionary significance in so far as our effect the planet would have been removed. Therefore opening up the opportunity for species that survive the extinction event to evolve into the ecological vacuum that would result.

Well, I'm not going to worry too much about that. I'm more worried about the problems we face today. And I strongly believe that the human spirit will find a way to survive and develop a more environmentally and socially stable culture globally.

I wish to replace belief with knowledge [Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge"]. I think this is all about disproving false theories and ultimately, science is then the knowledge of ultimate reality.

But I agree, many biological scientist are very stuck in the belief that we are made of inanimate and mindless material parts that are beyond the knowledge of our experience.

I believe that it is precisely because this is not true, and that we are connected to the deepest nature in the universe that we can survive by coming to know better the deepest parts of ourselves.

Why ?. Surely that just poses more questions such as ;

1 what is ultimate reality.
2 Is science always right.

If I just....Believe.....then, nothing else matters. Does it ?.

That depends in what you believe.

Is science always right.

There is truth and there is falsehood. There is absolute truth and relative truth and then there is also falsehood. If science mean knowledge then science is understanding the difference. For sure some science functions in a relative universe and is never more than partially true. This is empirical science; the science of the definable, measurable and temporal.

what is ultimate reality?

One way is to point out ultimate reality is to understand the falsehood of all descriptions of it because all descriptions of it use mere words and mere words are always going to be trapped by relative meanings. Alternatively one may point out ultimate reality by saying it is limitless, infinitely interconnected, as vast as space yet dimensionless and timeless. You can only really understand that for yourself but the danger is that we project what we think it should be and mistake it for our projections; we may then become governed by our own delusions. We may even find scientific methods to test what we observe and still come to false conclusions explaining what we find.

Like finding a particular gene that enabled the human brain to develop language and then concluding that this gene is the "cause" of consciousness.
