RE: Quantum Physics books
ORIGINAL: houseboy
Just a warning. I've had an interest in quantum physics for years (ever since I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainace by Robert Pirsig - not a physics book but it grabs the interest) but I have to say that, fascinated as I am, I still find it incomprehensible.
That's quantum physics for ya. Bit like the theory of relativity, difficult to get your head around at first.
I've also read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and also his second book "Lila". Both great books, but a little heavy reading for some. Ok once you get into them though.
"What the Bleep do we know?" is a great docu/film. Covers a lot of good ideas and put it in simple terms that anyone can understand. My other half loved it and scientific type things aren't usually her cup of tea. 😉
I've just been trying to get my head around some quantum stuff at the minute... maybe someone will know the answer to this...
If a quantum particle exists in both states at the same time (i.e. rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise) and it is only when it is observed that it takes on a single state, then how do scientists know that it exists in both states before the observation? Sounds a bit like schrodingers cat to me. 🙂

Hi Giles,
just to let you know there's another post relating to this

I know what you mean, how can you observe the unobserved. Eveninanimate objectsmust be able to influence particles somehow....
sounds like i must get this schrodingers cat book!! 😀
RE: Quantum Physics books
by the way,
thanks starlight for the link.......
very interesting, do you recommend them? bit pricy thats all?? 😀
RE: Quantum Physics books
hi golden dolphin,
Try Amazon.com, much cheaper.
I haven't heard it apart from the freebie on the soundstrue website.

At last, a member of the "Lila Squad". Your last paragraph really asks the question that I asked initially, that is, if we don't know how to measure what what we are made of how do we know that we exist at all? Best not to dwell on this too long 'cos it can be scary but it still makes you think, yeah?
