Proof that the Mind is seperate?

There was a program on TV last night (can't recall what channel it was, Channel4 or 5 I think, definitely had adverts) about conjoined twins Abigail and Brittany from Minnesota in the US. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abigail_and_Brittany_Hensel )

Note: Sounds like the same program details on Wiki: "They appeared in a follow-up documentary on The Learning Channel on December 17, 2006 filmed around the time of their 16th birthday, in which they discuss dealing with puberty and getting their driver's licenses" or this one "Extraordinary People: The Twins Who Share a Body"

Anyway, I only came across the program by accident as I switched channels just before going to bed, but found it fascinating and watched it to the end.

What interested me was the co-ordination that was taking place individually for each of them and also the co-ordination that they achieved together.

Apparently, they each have control of their own side of the body and can't feel anything of the other half's side. Parts of the program showed them clearly acting independantly such as writing school work, each with a pen and on seperate paper writing their own thing, or playing the piano together, something that could easily be achieved through them each playing their own half of the music (left or right hand) in unison.

In another part of the program, however, they were writing an email on the computer, using both hands to type the message each participating in the construction of what needed to be said, without the need to verbally communicate between each other as to what they were typing. Also, when then talked, they were able to either say the same identical sentance at the same time, or "cross-talk" where each would say parts of the sentance, swapping between who was talking, as if they already knew what sentance was being spoken. Also when they were speaking they would occasionally interchange words of singularity and plural in reference to themselves (i.e. "We" and "I") when speaking about the opposite way around. i.e. Whichever was speaking would say "I" in place of the word "We" when referring to themselves as a whole.

Now, they haven't undergone any detailed medical/physiological studies to try and investigate how they are able to operate together with such ease, and the medical profession believes that there may be some nerve connections that interconnect both brains which would certainly assist in co-ordination of the physical motor functions of the body, such as walking, driving etc.

What is fascinating is the way they seem to know what the other is thinking or saying, yet are able to act independantly as well.

Could this be that either:

a) Their mind is a single "entity" (for want of a better word) that is able to divide itself and multi-task to control their bodies through interacting with both brains or
b) They each have individual minds, but these are interconnected in some sort of "energetic" or "psychic" manner to allow them to work as one as well as individually or
c) Their minds are really part of their brains and the possible nerve connections between the brains are extremely advanced and something that has not been seen before that allows a conjoining of their thoughts as well as motor functions.

What is interesting as well is that, although they say they cannot feel the other side of the body, it was pointed out in the program that, if one has an itch, the other will reach across and scratch it, without any verbal or visual communication.

The medical profession who have been examining their case, say that they are baffled and can't explain it, however they appear to be looking at it from a purely physiological perspective. Could the way these twins operate in fact be proof that our Minds are independant of our brains and/or bodies?

Re theircompleting each other's sentences.......people who know each other really well do that so that's not so remarkable. I remember my Nan and Grandad who were almost joined at the hip never having to complete a sentence..............And I can take a pretty good stab at what my other half is thinking....he seldom surprises me.

Wow _ I've just read what they share. For me this isn't proof that the mind is seperate from thebrain but that mindbody/bodymind are one and the same.I am completely convinced that our minds lie not just in our brain, but in our bodies - our bodies remember and react (gut feelings, heart feelings, etc) These two share so much body that it reinforces my theory that our minds are not just in our head but throughout ourbodies. Hence the importance of exercise andbodywork inmaintaining our mentaland emotional health.

Theyhave..........
2 heads
2 arms -- originally 3, but the short malformed central arm was removed
2 spinal cords and backbones -- surgery corrected scoliosis
3½ lungs -- surgery expanded their chest cavity while correcting scoliosis
2 breasts
2 hearts in a shared circulatory system -- medicine taken by either affects both
1 liver
2 stomachs
3 kidneys
2 gallbladders
1 bladder
1 ribcage
1 large intestine
1 reproductive system
1 pelvis with 2 legs

RE: Proof that the Mind is seperate?

b) can apply to twins in general, not just these two. I've known people who've had a twin who died at birth/ in infancy to say that they lost part of themselves. My ex sisters in law have never been physically separated (and still dress the same aged 54) and they feel v strange if their other half isn't there (for example, if one is off sick from work and the other had to drive in ... they work at the same place ..)

So maybe the question is how much applies to this set of twins with a shared body, and how much applied to twins anyway.

I guess I should clarify what I mean by "seperate". To me, it'sproof that the mind and memory etc. is not just confined to a physical mass that is the brain, but exists outside of that purely physical mass. My beliefis that ourmind and memories are contained within our energetic body that encompasses the whole of our physical being, and interacts with the physical body through the brain and other energy stimulation points (meridians, chakras etc. whatever you want to call them).
