Hello
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question!
I am wondering about intention...
Is there any known physiology or scientific explanation of intention?
Is it just another thought pattern?
If so, is this understood in terms of physiology?
If it is regarded as being different to simple thoughts, how so?
Reason I am asking is that in acupuncture (and presumably other energetic-based medicines) the intention of the practitioner is regarded as being very important at the moment of needling. I am trying to understand this better from a scientific viewpoint.
Very interested in your ideas.
Thanks!

RE: Physiology of Intention
I don't know from a standard physiology or scientific point of view, but in my opinion, our thoughts and intention are all energy and the interaction of our energy with that of our clients causes an action/reaction based on that intention.
That's the short answer anyway, haven't got time to go into detail I'm afraid.

RE: Physiology of Intention
I can't answer your question scientifically either Aragorn, except that I doubt science per se has gone into this at all. However, scientifically intention might relate to how, at the quantum level, observation alters that being observed. Philosophically I would argue that human beings may be the only creatures on Earth who consistently and at a deep, sustained level, display intention. With animals action is more generally instinctive.
I didn't know that about acupuncture, that intention comes into it. But I know it is a hot subject of debate in feng shui circles, so it must be related to how intent affects chi? However, bizarrely, the debate in feng shui has the Orientals and classical feng shui practitioners (those who use methods centuries old from China) arguing that intention has absolutely nothing to do with feng shui, whereas modern, Western practitioners who adapt the traditional style to modern thought, also adding a dose of rationality IMO, believe that intention does affect feng shui work.

RE: Physiology of Intention
we create our total reality by the power of our intention, so this is an amazingly important thought. healing has been wisely described as 'focussed intention' on the part of the healer - or any therapist you like.
synchronicity being what it is, there is a film going on release in May which is entirely about this subject of intentionality - already out in the US, and there are 2 useful websites which refer to the sort of scientific info you are after.

RE: Physiology of Intention
Hello Tim,
I guess that the physiology of intention would come down to quantum physics, as David points out. It's action following thought, and since thoughts are energy, it must follow that the energy is being transmitted at the quantum level.

Patsy.
