Hello
A couple of years ago I was told by a tutor that brain tissue had been found in the gut. It is a tiny, tiny amount and the type of tissue that is responsible for the most instinctive drives (IIRC).

I have no references for this, but I was interested in following it up.
Has anyone else heard of this find, or have further information on it??

It's pretty remarkable stuff, IMO. Brings a whole new meaning to having a gut feeling about something. My tutor felt that if further brain tissue were found around the body, there would definitely be some in the heart, and probably more aligned to all the other chakras too (all purely speculation!)

For me, my particular interest in this is that, in Chinese medicine, the 5 primary emotions are regarded as originating from our organs (liver, spleen, kidneys etc) rather than the brain.
Anyone know more, or have other thoughts on this?

Cheers

RE: Gut Feeling

Hi Aragon,
I am a Biodynamic massage therapist and I work with a stethoscope listening to my clients' gut (peristalsis) and find out a lot about them just from doing that. you can read more about Biodynamic massage on www.ahbmt.org or www.chiron.org

I would also point you to a book by Michael D. Gershon 'The Second Brain: The Scientific Basis of Gut Instinct and a Groundbreaking New Understanding of Nervous Disorders of the Stomach and Intestine'.

Fascinating! I picked this more or less at random from my google search ... but there are thousands more:

RE: Gut Feeling

How interesting, for over the last few days my heart has led me to read the scientific data on consciousness not being in the brain exclusively, or even mostly. (It seems as if we are 'in' our head only because we look out from our eyes IMO.) Here's a wonderful webpage putting forth the idea, with many facts, that consciousness is in the heart most of all, though also throughout the body:

http://www.zeropoint.ca/heartIII6enigmasheart.htm

The fact that nobody (in or from science) knows what makes the heart beat is one of those horrible mysteries science tends to sweep under the rug and ignore. But the ancient teachings of almost all peoples have it that our Higher Self links to us in the heart - the Hindu Atman for example is usually regarded to. The heartbeat seems to be prompted by something in or connected to the heart which comes from 'other dimensions' or higher planes - there's nothing in the physical to explain it at all. In my Path this aspect of Self is called the Threefold Flame.

Yes, yes, yes, : I'm really glad you are talking about this, as I'm sure we think with our guts, heart , liver etc. Loved your link Laura.:)

Slightly off-topic on the heart - I'm always telling my hunched over clients to think and lead their walking with their emotional centre (ie open-hearted and lifted at the sternum, which allows their shoulders to drop and release ) rather than their rational centre (poking their heads forward, always worrying about what they are doing next and wearing their shoulder blades like a pair of ear-rings).

This all fits in with where we lodge stress in our bodies, and where we feel our emotions: so many people who are stressed have varying degrees of colitis.
